Hi. Got under my hrv today to change the oil and noticed the driveshaft had a bush thing on it that looked nasty. Thanks to the post below I now know it to be a damper. My question no is can I weld around the narrowed bit of the driveshaft to thicken it and then grind it back? Cheers Jed ![](http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr155/JEDSTER_bucket/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-11/69691073-8833-4D89-8981-21CAB08A7827_zpspijyqynj.jpg) so I cut it off Anyone know why they have them? Any how under the bush the driveshaft looks like rust has thinned the thickness but not sure if it was shaped this way either. Think I might need a new shaft. Have a look and tell me what you think. The "bush thingy" is a mass or torsional damper". I doubt you'll notice any difference given the state it was in. No idea whether the driveshaft side reduction is corrosion (pretty impressive if it is) though I note that if you google honda driveshaft broke you'll turn up a few that broke at that very spot.

Mmm cheers for that. I will try and find a second hand one just to be on the safe side. It will probably snap given the directional force on it. Thanks. Jed

Do you think I can weld it up and grind it back?

weld it up and see if it drives okay, you might get vibration but I doubt it. its not corrosion though as they are made that shape to hold the bush in place.

I would be inclined to leave it as it is, there was a similar bush damper thing on an old mk3 ibiza I inherited a few years ago, it was rattling about on the shaft so I cut it off, felt no vibrations at all from it, no need to weld that shaft.

I would say more likely to break if welded and also likely to bend in the welding process. Best left alone for now and keep an eye out for another if it is worrying you.

As above, leave well alone.
It looks like it's always been that way, filling with weld will be tedious and unessecary.

Would sleaving that not be a better idea than filling it with weld?

Doesn't need sleaving or welding thats how they are, if you want to replace it the dynamic balancer is about £40 ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

It's been like that all the time, you just haven't seen it, don't worry about it.

Thanks all will just leave it then. It's a great car. Runs whisper quiet and dead light for off-roading so well happy now.

Hi All I have an HRV 2005 the driveshaft snapped at the same point causing me to swerve lose power and nearly kill my family.
I can't believe Honda has not issued a warning for this serious design issue. Contacting them regarding this fault they state they have no record of these faults and and our proud of their design. They think that as its a old car its basically fine that these kind of events occur. Make sure you check under those dampers

Any drive shaft snapping isn't a nice experience, they usually snap and you'll have no drive as the piece connected to the gearbox/diff will continue to spin with least resistance.
