Hello chaps.
As tht title really. I have a tonne of questions related to the T4, so if you own one your input is required.
I enjoy vans, for some reason and I am needing to replace my Vito. I enjoyed the size of my vito but the build quality was, well, poor! When I went to buy my vito everyone said buy a T4, well now I am here and looking, although its not quite that straight forward.
I currently have a T5 and the thing is excellent, I would love a T4 but the price they command is a bit unjustifiable for me at the minute unfortunately. With this I found myself looking at the lower end of the budget for T4's and I managed to find something. It will have to be bought as a project and this is where I need peoples input.
The T4 is for sale from a salvage yard, undamaged, but a non-running retired builders van at what I deem a fair price. It is advertised as the 1.9, I don't know if this is turbo or N/A. Well its advertised as a non-runner but no reason why so I am going to expect the engine to come out and be replaced, if this isn't the case then its a winner, prepare for the worst and all that. If the engine is completely creamed and beyond any form of economical repair what are the options for replacement? Lack of engine replacements would be enough to make me reconsider the possibility.
Am I going to be able to take a engine out of a similar age vehicle, MK3 golf, Passat, vento or something like that for a direct swap or am I going to have to stick with a T4 item? If swaps are not viable is there a viable source of 1.9 T4 engines available for a direct replacement?
When it comes to MOT time on these things are there anything they are prone to failure on? With the following they have I am sure they're pretty robust, but is there any common failures? Do they rot out in any specific places? Sills and small patches on the floor are of no real worry to me in all honesty, but if its going to require weeks of welding this is something I can not really commit, I understand every one is different and I am going to have to inspect it myself to conclude its structural state, but off the top of my head I cant recall seeing many rotten ones (when compared to transits or vitos!).
Is it going to be possible to tow with a 1.9 T4? I have a trailer and load that will never exceed 750kg and to be fair, for the minute I can only ever see me towing very locally, probably no more than 25 miles if that! Would a T4 be up for that kind of task?
The T4 has what seems like a semi-cult following, it seems like people love them! Why is this? When I was last down the south west I followed 6, one after another down a high street, they weren't together as they all went separate ways but you don't even seem to get that with modern mass produced things, let alone things mildly considered retro. I also enjoy the way that there are so many modifying options with them.
The T4 is something I would love to have a go at but I just need to find if it is something that is within my reach both financially and physically with my time and level of commitment. They seem to be a vehicle which are becoming ever popular, so it would be a bonus to put one back on the road rather than take it off.
Any help or suggestions would be excellent and greatly appreciated.
