Selling my beloved Jetta after three years of ownership and 35,000 miles. Really don't want to get rid of it but I'm driving a lot further to work every day and can't afford/don't have the space for two cars.
I bought it three years ago as a runabout after my quite new Clio blew up on the motorway. It's since ferried me between Falmouth and Yorkshire four times a year, and been used to deliver pizzas for 6 months, covering 35,000 miles and honestly broken down once, entirely due to my own fault (I replaced a rear whel bearing and in a rush didn't torque it, just did it by feel - WAY overtightened and the bearing seized halfway down the M5). Other than that the car has been unfailing.
Obviously the looks may not suit everyone, for the record I didn't do it. When I bought the car it was on red standard steels, scraping on everything with a rusted bonnet and roof rack. I tried to make it a bit more normal but the paint would need entirely redoing to make it look halfway decent. That being said the car is solid with just surface rust here and there. I did get some weding done on the nearside rear sill for the MOT a couple of years ago but there's been nothing since.
The Jetta has cheapo coilovers that do the job if a little crashy, though I sure everyone has experienced them. Also got banded steels, 14x8 and 14x8.5 I think (from memory). Definitely getting ready for a couple of new tyres on the fronts. The Pierburg card has been replaced for a Weber, drives very well, nippy, not at all bad on fuel (on a long, very relaxed run 45mpg is manageable). GTI Front seats, (I seem to remember the ad when I bought saying it had a GTI clutch for what ever that is worth).
Most recently the car has had new front top mounts, new pads, discs and brake shoes (plus one new drum from when the bearing seized). It's also been fitted with a brand new diesel starter motor about two months ago so starts really well (although the battery may be on it's way out possibly, or it might be because I haven't been driving it much).
Cambelt and tensioner was changed at 130,000ish. General service done every 5/6,000.
Has a slight coolant leak, I've always just kept on top of it (once a week check) rather than dig in to it.
I think that's everything, will add more if it occurs to me. Any questions please ask, car is available to view in Leeds any evening after 6ish. I don't have insurance on it unfortunately but you could start it/drive it on the driveway and cul-de-sac (dead end street).
