So, the metro has gone...making room for this (and hopefully an mgb soon) 1970 Baja bug. Bit mad max for me...but solid and fitted with a twin carb 1641 - so goes OK for a bug. Plan will be to de-max it a bit, then generally mess about and enjoy it without needing to worry about it too much... Definitely keeping this on the roof

This looks ace. I'd love a Baja beetle despite not really being a beetle person.

Loved these when i was young. saw one in an episode of Mcgyver and was instandly hooked. Hope you really enjoy it and loving the transformer theme, but please , take the chickenwire of the backwindow cause thats pretty ugly. All the luck in the world.

Don't worry - the chicken wire (and the fake cb mast) are due to meet a skip tomorrow....
Then I think we need to find a decent baja rack and have start to have a play around.

Love it, the Baja is probably just about the only Beetle I would consider owning and this one is definitely up there as one that fits the bill. Yep, de mad maxing it is definitely something that needs to be done!!

Yep, de mad maxing it is definitely something that needs to be done!! Agree. De-maxing has started. Chicken wire, cb mast and Jerry cans have gone. See the parts thread if you want some free Jerry cans and holders. Been out for an initial blat...loving the stupidness of it all... First fill up Stuck a sticker on it.. Have to work away for a couple of weeks so have stashed it in my container. Seems quite at home.

Definately has potential. The 'Mad Max' look is quite amusing. I immediately thought of the Tamiya model that I wanted as a kid :

Love this. I would probably paint it like the Tamiya model. Nothing wrong with buying not building, for me the fun is in the driving, not scrabbling around the garage floor for months/years on end.

Thanks PP. I'm just not that good at mechanics so a lot of the time I feel a bit of a fraud on here - despite being a massive fan of older cars. Toying between just leaving it, letting the patina build (although I'm definitely redoing the autobot logo on the roof in silver. Or red), doing a part sticker bomb, or doing a general Lee vibe (but that has been done). Before worrying about that need to do fuel lines (we have a minor leak somewhere) and a new wiper switch. Wipers would help in this weather...

scrabbling around the garage floor for months/years on end. Haha. Still can't find that roll-pin that I dropped. Beats talking to the wife though! 'De-maxing' made me laugh too. Was the mini-cab aerial attached to anything? I would just drive it as it is. This would have been my dream ride when I was seventeen. As for 'feeling like a fraud' it could be worse, you could be driving a Rover ( runs for the bunker).

I love this, what a cool beetle, I agree with the chicken wire removal, the CB Ariel, well I like the idea but I'm not a fan of the mag mount and trailing cable, so I'd of kept it but rethought it, maybe mount it on the engines frame, I don't like the tool roll over the motor, (reminds me of a Harley) and the jerry cans.... I like them, I love the fact the motor hangs out and that exhaust 'flap' well I think it's fantastic! What a great toy to drive around in, I bet you can't wait for snow now eh?

All gone now...along with the tool roll and the Jerry cans.

1 part satin black cellulose 2 parts yacht varnish applied with a rag, thats a bit of acquired taste! i get the original theme 100% but it is a bit of a shame if you wanted to go to a clean paint job, would be a right bstard in prep

It's going to get a few stickers over time. Quite fancy solid silver (not chrome) wheels. But generally think the aesthetic effect will be from the CBA school of styling... This was the article that pushed me over the edge to purchase.I have it bookmarked and every time I get (expensive) plans for shiny paint or add ons I re-read it... thegarage.jalopnik.com/five-reasons-why-you-need-to-buy-a-baja-bug-right-now-1629937931Ps - don't read it. You'll want one...
