I was working at a certain local Airforce base the other week where I spotted one of these parked up. I was then thinking about how much of a grin it would be to own one, if one could actually be found within a decent price range. I then thought about an UMM as a cheaper alternative and, today, you update the thread! It does seem a tad ridiculous that more than capable alterrnatives to the Landy have always been out there but just have been overlooked. Nice to see something different given a bit of love and attention, great read! Very UMMM.

Only one M51 prototype was ever built with a factory supplied BMW motor. This was right at the end of UMM production and it never got any further. The vehicle still exists and has recently been rebuilt by Peter Tumble Motorsport in Portugal. If only... You don't find a BMW six more appealing than a Cummins 2.8 then? More appealing than an old Cummins 4BT or 6BT yes. But now I am after something super modern, brand new and efficient, so the new R2.8 should be just the ticket. The diff ratios I currently have work out perfectly for the power/torque with the R2.8 and the size tyres I have, and it is not a crazy amount of torque more than the standard box, so to start with I am going to keep that... unless I find a six speed and 2wd/4wd selectable transfer case that will mount to that... An LS3 is very appealing too... but that defeats all I've just said... and is the plan for something else...

Hey alter ( alter means older in German but used as a greeting between teenagers around here), that's some Action Man antics going on there and now you've got a whole convoy to take down to The Cape. Can't you airbrush that Multivan out of the post though? That's what the middle-class mumsies drive their kids to kindergarten with! Don't want to think you're a weekend warrior so maybe a camouflage vest too?

Nice to see something different given a bit of love and attention, great read! Steyr Puch have made some wonderful vehicles! There is a very weak/tenuous link between these two vehicles.. bare with me.. - Steyr Puch were involved with the Mercedes G-wagon - The french military used the G-wagon built under licence but with some french mechanicals, it was called the Peugeot P4 - The gearbox in the P4 was a Peugeot BA10/5 - as fitted to the UMM So that thing is basically UMMs second cousin. Sort of. Kinda.

Ahh, it's usually loaded to the gunnels with outdoors gear, tooling or work related stuff (subsea salvage - exploration - exploitation is the company strap line). Wasn't enough room to land the heli so had to take the van.

So where does this lead us now? Well.. to the Super Secret Shore Base! Basically a poverty bat cave, this is where most of the toys and spare parts now live with the machinery and tooling to fix, make, upgrade and restore. IMG_8857 by Alex de Vries, on Flickr IMG_9230 by Alex de Vries, on Flickr Winched the crew cab into the facility with little UMM then pushed him into one of the dark recesses to deal with after I had sorted all the parts that came with him.. IMG_9038 by Alex de Vries, on Flickr Ohh and little UMM decided that he didn't like water anymore so started to steam it all out of the exhaust. Most excellent. The motors on these are known for the heads going porous, and that's exactly what has happened with this one, between a coolant passage and inlet on one of the cylinders.

So good to see this thread get updated, I love reading about your adventures with UMMs. You've actually inspired me to dust off my own 4x4 and give it some mileage this year after sitting unused for a long time.

Ahh thanks, you're welcome. Yes get on it! Since replacing the head a few weeks ago we did 500 miles in it within two weeks, including a couple of days laning around where we are in devon. You'll remember why you kept it as soon as you get offroad!

And this is where you currently find us. Tucked away in a corner of SSSB.. IMG_0003 by Alex de Vries, on Flickr Firstly wheels off and springs out... the standard steels are away to be banded to 10" wide then sent to my friend Alex Hatcher of South Molton to paint (he had the nice Maestro van at RRG), the springs have been dropped off with Jones Springs in Wednesbury (up north eh) for a 6" lifted main leaf and secondary leaf to suit, the rest of the spring pack will be retempered and re-used. IMG_0006 by Alex de Vries, on Flickr This is not a trick of the eye, the new tyre is only just next to Little UMMs... those are 35" Maxxis Treppadors. IMG_0119 by Alex de Vries, on Flickr IMG_0120 by Alex de Vries, on Flickr And roughly where it will be on MegaUMM.. IMG_0256 by Alex de Vries, on Flickr IMG_0259 by Alex de Vries, on Flickr Many rusty bits to chop out due to panel overlap.. will be rewelding the rear and front edge to retain a similar to stock arch profile, just widened the whole lot out to the maximum it would go. IMG_0297 by Alex de Vries, on Flickr But wait one... go back a few pictures... WHY IS LITTLE UMM IN THE WAREHOUSE WITH HIS BONNET UP...?!??

daslandroverman suggested I was trying to maintain radio silence but I have some irrelevant info : In the 1980s, while still at school, I worked two summers at Thorpe Park on catering mobiles - ice-cream vans and bikes and kiosks. My moment came when I was chosen to dress up as a gorilla for an Um-Bongo promotion. I rode out with the Thorpe Park rabbit and her beautiful assistants for the day in their golf-cart. Neither the rabbit nor I could see behind us in the suits hence the assistants. A great sweaty day ( in that suit) with the lovely young ladies of which there were a few working at Thorpe Park. No, I didn't get to keep the suit. I've said too much.. now I'm going to have to kill you. greencarfritz you've got a great scene going on there. Those tyres have got a bit of tread on them eh?

Well.. I sort of knew it was coming. I'd been putting off taking the head off of little UMM for a while, but on his last trip out he used all of his water in 15 miles on a laning trip and every time I was at a junction or stopped in traffic he was creating a giant transit van sized cloud of steam on the exhaust (drivers) side.. slightly embarrassing and alarming at the same time.. still carried on running though whilst getting topped up regularly! So, these XD3TE motors are known for the aluminium head becoming porous between an inlet and coolant passage. So I spoke to Ian at cylinderheads.co.uk and he had a new one cast for me abroad (eastern europe I think?) and then machined at his works before being sent down to me fitted up with valves and with all the appropriate bolts and gaskets needed. £830 for the privilege but no other solution really. IMG_0059 by Alex de Vries, on Flickr You're fortunate in that you can remove the fan cowling in a few minutes and then I usually sit ontop of the radiator with my feet on the front axle in this space. Folding the bonnet right back so it is up against the windscreen gives you fairly good access to all but the furthest end of the motor. Just make sure you tie the bonnet off to something as you don't want that dropping on your head. Fact. IMG_0061 by Alex de Vries, on Flickr So with the fan and ancillary belts loosed off and the vacuum pump removed you just have to unbolt some brackets, move the diesel lines out of the way, drain the coolant and remove those hoses, pull the power steering hoses out of the way and cable tie down towards the front of the engine, support the turbo and exhaust and remove the exhaust manifold bolts. Now you can remove the rocker cover, remove the rocker shaft as one piece (don't lose the oil seal), remove the push rods (mark a bit of card up and punch each one through so you keep them in order), remove the injectors and glow plug wiring, then you can start cracking off the head bolts off. Remove the head as one unit with the water pump and fan pulley assembly and also with the inlet manifold attached. Just watch out for the oil line that goes to the vacuum pump. And there we go, old vs new.. IMG_0066 by Alex de Vries, on Flickr IMG_0069 by Alex de Vries, on Flickr New head gasket on, the old one had no damage visible so it confirms that the head was porous. IMG_0084 by Alex de Vries, on Flickr No special hints or tips for this job really. Only to take your time and not lose any little oil seals or bits. Also that the rear most head bolt has to be undone but there is not the height to remove it or install it so leave it in the head loose. IMG_0085 by Alex de Vries, on Flickr IMG_0099 by Alex de Vries, on Flickr The only tool I absolutely needed was a Snap On torque wrench with digital control and also the ability to do angle measurements as well. I simply couldn't of used my analogue torque angle measurer as there wasn't the room to get it in, especially the rear most bolts, impossible. Highly recommended even if it was several hundred bucks. Now all back together and tested for 500 miles on and offroad, no loss of oil or water. Winning.

This gets more Wild Geese by the minute. Time for a regime change.
I didn't touch da rabbit! Those ladies only had eyes for the blokes who operated the water ski-tow or the 'pirates' of Treasure Island though they were all sweetness when they wanted a free Cornetto.

So is the intention to use the new tyres as flotation devices as well as road & off road use?
Very nice please keep the pictures coming?

A couple of facebook posts from Ibex vehicles left me in mind of big UMM. I wonder if there's some design inspiration there?

I'd say there could be some inspiration taken by Ibex from UMM. It is purely practical though if you think about it.
Those sloped front bonnet corners mean that you can see where you are placing each tyre when offroad rather than guessing when you have a long flat bonnet such as you'd see with anything else other than a forward control.
