Interesting projects, I am impressed how many projects you can do at the same time. Do you have a link to that rear disc brake conversion, as my Mahindra has the same rear axle.

What is the kerb weight of one of these things? A Defender is around 2.75 ton and they are mostly aluminium! There is some serious thickness plating going on! Loving the updates though, keep em coming. More like 1.7 tonnes for a 90 and 1.8 for a 110 ? Ours is about 1.3 tonnes so lighter than most modern stuff. Not a lightweight build but some serious kit going in so probably won't break either - thanks for sharing. James

Great to catch up with this thread! Fantastic spec on the engine, that's going to get it shifting along at quite a rate. Interesting to see a size comparison with the LS block too. My own OM606 build has been slowly crawling along, but funnily enough I've been distracted from my cars by boats too, although mine are much slower than yours!

Daan Hi Daan, Interesting, got pictures of the underside of the Mahindra? What front axle / transfer case / gearbox does it use? I get them from my friend Filipe at Pecas UMM in Portugal. Some pictures on his website but no prices on there at the moment - I paid 225 euros plus postage, that was in autumn last year before we left the EU though so not sure if you'd have more to pay now. pecas-umm.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=60&product_id=237

Indeed, I want it to be strong enough to be able to roll onto its side with little damage caused.

Dammit BenzBoy, I only come back to the forum every now and again and one of the threads I come straight back to check on is yours! Have you got on any further since the snorkel fitment and landy air box? What's holding it up build wise?? Yes I hope it will shift along nicely! Many torques, I'll be interested to get it on the rolling road when it's fully built again to see what it makes - though that will be on giant mud tyres so that'll probably wind it right down numbers wise.. and I wonder how much loss I'll get through the drivetrain too. It's about the best I could do I think.

Slam it. There I said it. And either side exit exhausts or truck stacks please. LS would sound great through truck stacks...

Good to see progress being made on many fronts. Dunno how people manage multiple projects..... Big Umm... is going to be a beast!
One observation.... in my experience, workshop assistants of the female variety don’t like to be described as trolls (bad press & unflattering reviews in Lord of the Rings perhaps), and much prefer “elf”, “pixie” or “angel”. Angel maybe going a bit far though, unless they show huge talent. Suppose in the end it all depends whether she reads this thread.......
Always look forward to updates on this thread and on Green Car.

I am planning to change the front axle for a dana 30 or 44 in the future and fit floating shafts in the rear axle. ratio is 4.88. Rear axle: There are some pictures of the box in my thread. Daan

I'm halfway through making my engine adaptor currently. My business has been holding progress up as I've been so busy, but I'm trying to make time at weekends again. I've also been playing with boats - me and the other half got a little river cruiser last summer, and this has snowballed into buying a classic wooden broads cruiser which we're going to be living on as soon as we sort everything out and lockdown ends.

Irrespective of how you address your assistant, you could at least get her some overalls that fit a bit better. All that excess material is just begging to get sucked into a power tool. At the very least, stick them in a boil wash and fling them in a tumble drier to see if it shrinks them a touch (the overalls, not the aasistant).
Loving your work BTW!
Just one more thing to suggest: exhaust brake.

Daan Very interesting, that does indeed look like a narrow track Dana 44 (used most prolifically on the narrow track Jeep CJ) - I'd be surprised if it was a different bolt pattern.

this is all sorts of awesome. You do seem truly fearless in your builds. Where did you learn all of the skills? Well, I just kind of taught myself when I needed to. I got Green Car the (now) Supercharged BMW flat twin engined Citroen 2cv when I was 16 - mostly because it was super cheap but also because I knew they were a real nuts and bolts giant mechano kit so I could learn how mechanical things worked on a simple level.. I studied engineering at Uni although that doesn't mean I learnt a lot there or got any hands on experience making/creating/mending. One of the reasons I took the MegaUMM project on, apart from it being one of 3 left, was that I knew how rough it was and that I could improve my fabrication skills and thinking by working on it! The secret is the confidence to do it - anyone is capable of anything (with the right teaching/development/thoughts) - which I got from reading forums like this, finding out how to do things from posts of the foremost members - grumpynorthener, jonnybravo, glenanderson etc - and the same from the migweb forum. Also the quality of tools and knowing which ones to use - or even that some tool exists for that function. I rarely buy any big tool new but made sure I got the nicest welder I could afford (ESAB - the biggest of their 240v models), a plasma cutter when I could, the fly press was beer money (the dies were more than its cost) and the gabro box press is a pretty good bit of kit for its size and price - I've not needed a bigger metal bender to be honest and they are peanuts to buy used. Thanks, it's awesome to be able to work on it let alone what the final form will be!

I suppose it depends if you have fitted bull bars, steering guard, roof rack, winch etc etc. My bad. Happy to be corrected.
