I hate them for their lowest possible budget, parts bin engineering (like most Ford's of the period), yet quite like them as well as they're just so completely unassuming. Anyway, heres my mates not too skanky mk3... apologies for the curse word-mobile photoskillz. I'm trying to convince him to slam it, fit some wide steels and lose the side trim...

Well you know what I think. My van is not the best car I have ever had, my biggest gripes are legroom and power but that can be fixed but it could be as good or better than my old XR2. I'm sure. It was a 1983 car i had in 1999 retro then IMO, one of the most fun car I have had. so although it rotted I loved it. if I could i'd shove that engine in the van. I cant do the van like that yet as I have my other stuff to crack on with this summer, plus it has a job to do this year. I'd say have some fun have some fun mate, its great fun fixing up old cheapie cars, cos theres nowt to lose. your colour scheme done well with some creative body mods could be ace. no doubt you have seen the 'other' thread for inspiration

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Let's look at the evidence.
Cheap: Check Good handling & ride: Check (provided it's properly maintained!) Easy to fix: Check Cheap to run: Check Good parts availability: Check Good parts "swapability": Check Probably rusty and untidy: Check Seems to wind people up: Check
What's not to like! ;D Go for it!
(Seriously, I have driven brand new mk3 Fiestas, knackered rusty ones, 1.1s, 1.6Ss, 1.3s, and XR2is and two RS examples. "I get all the Fiestas" to paraphrase a certain record. They're no worse than any other small car of their time, and much better than some!!)

Beyond basic, no luxuries or refinements to speak of. Not true! My Mum had a brand new 1.1 3-door in 1992. Hers didn't even have a lid on the glovebox! ;D

Ok, some obvious questions. Will 13x7 RS 4 spokes (or other escort/capri rims) fit onto a Mk3 fezza? Are they Macpherson strut all round? If both those are yes then surely mods are dead easy? 2 coils off the springs and add some 13 inch, wide rims (which ebay should throw up in 2 seconds).

mike yes to all of that I think. Wheels with Fords seem pretty interchangable, which is nice. Like your thinking. And wheres that Lotus Cortina MK3 photoshop?

I look forward to telling my boss that our J reg wiesel Fester van is retro ;D The handling is a bit of an issue with that heavy old 1.8 as opposed to a little old HCS. Certainly the van understeers like a pig when pushed (who said slow down?). On a positive note it has enough grunt to tow Transits and Shoguns around and on one occasion a certain RR members Senator up a near vertical hill when it conked out after its MOT Anyway, I seriously considered a Si as a daily ( still daily fodder to me really ) awhile ago and a good one is still a cracking car. Even a shonky one will rattle on forever with little or no maintenance ( the last one I serviced at work hadn't been touched for 40k miles!) Remember, retro is in the treatment; Skirts + bad boy bonnet = chav mobile Slammed + wide steels + matt black and green paint = WinnAh

Mechanic's rule #1... If the car works, anything left on the floor after you finished wasn't needed in the first place

Well tomorrow the mods start, first off i will remove every last drop of diesel then the battery followed by some descreet body mods in that it will be cubed. Some of you are scared that the precious forum is being contaminated with max power style cars, well times change and oneday the mk3 will be accepted but sadly not mine.

I think it helps that the earlier ones have a valance below the bumper, not just a huge expanse of plastic (which some of its contempories had), helps with a more retro look. Finding one that has a valance intact on the other hand could be tricky.....

Well spotted mike, thats partially why i'm swapping to old bumpers, of course it will need painting down there and reshaping! Wish my 1984 Sierra had one!
