This is strange. I was asking myself this exact same question earlier today and thought it would make a good thread on here. I think a B204 powered Saab. I looked at them earlier in the year for a combo swap and it seemed possible to pick up moted B204s for around £500. What kind of power could you get out of one with an additional £500? Don't they run up to 275bhp on a basic map? I did this very thing for the Ppc £999 challenge and made 485hp for just under a grand starting with a 2.0 9000cse £300 donor car £200 Holset hx35 turbo £25 early 9000 t3 cast manifold £160 630cc injectors . £100 3" stainless bits to make a 3" exhaust £40 3 bar map sensor £80 can USB programming cable + free t5 suite software . 13.1 quarter at 118 mph with full interior and a boot full of curse word . Laggy as hell but once it got going hysterical How reliable was this setup? got me thinking

Supercharged XJs come up occasionally. Obviously ratty and leggy at that price, but 370 out of the box and 480 (iirc) with straightforward mods......

Block decked and head faced with new rings shells and main timing chain and guides . Delete balance chain and get a can USB lead and knock led fitted to the dash is as much as you need for a reliable 450hp setup . I used to run over 500hp but 450 is the best level for reliability . Most just put the ingredients together and use a map from another car but don't bother with any live data usually resulting in head gasket issues

I'm actually trying to enquire about an ex-plod S70 T5 at the minute. I know they're 250 standard but I have read about a firm that can map them to 310bhp. The map itself costs £440. They look like an ace car, comfortable, roomy, practical and nippy to boot. . Ran T5's and T5R's back in the 90's. You will need to change the exhaust in addition to any increase in power or else you 'might' have a small issue with engine longevity. Ask me how I know... Also, you WILL need to upgrade the brakes, the standard ones fade really badly with the standard 225hp under 'spirited' driving. Good call though, I loved mine, probably the most comfortable car I have ever owned. Didn't realise how expensive F Bodys had become, a few years back a Grand would have bought you a ratty Pontiac version with 300+ as standard. P.

They look like an ace car, comfortable, roomy, practical and nippy to boot. You can have mine for £350 with 12 months' ticket in February (unless it fails miserably). In answer to the question, if it's just power, I can't think of anything better than an old Saab. Those big barges are lovely but a sight heavier. You'll need a bigger downpipe to get beyond about 225 on a 2.0 but if you pay less than £500 for the car that still keeps you well within budget. I have often wondered if you could make a budget sleeper with the B204. By budget I don't mean sub £1000, perhaps £1500, or as cheap as realistically possible. The above post seemed to document huge power for sub £1000, then, plus the price of the "sleeper vehicle" and any necessities to make it safe and suitable. I know people have put the B204 in vauxhalls. A base model faded red Corsa B has often crossed my mind, as has a nova and an older combo van. I can't think of anything less suspecting than a faded red Royal Mail combo van. I think this needs further thought and investigation. I can do you a 95 Tigra in faded red and an 02 B204 Saab convertible for £500 the pair, the Saab motor is smokey but only 85k, Tigra runs and drives, solid underneath new brakes. Interested? PM me for pics. Or i'll swap the pair for a good, running 2.0 Ecotec Turbo with looms and ECU. Steve

Paid < £ 1K for an Audi A8 4.2. That's 300 bhp (and 4wd). Think 750 BMs can be had for similar money. Nick I payed £600 for mine. 4.2 300hp and it had lots of gadgets and gismos. Bloody quick car too. I tried selling in on here a few years ago but it didnt sell. Ended up selling on ebay to some polish lads that stripped it to send back to poland. I couldnt even break it, no one wanted anything off it! Shame.

Wheels are a good price but he's wanting me to take the rest of the car for free...... It's tidier than mine but 100bhp short........ Nick

Many many moons ago I worked on Revs magazine and we did a feature where we each bought cars for under a grand (some of you may remember it) - One of my colleagues bought a V12 XJS for £750. It was a proper shed, but great fun. We timed it at Bruntingthorpe and it hit 139.9mph. I reckon you'd struggle to buy a cheaper, faster car than that... You could buy a car with a higher rated top speed than that for the cash, but whether it would achieve that speed is another matter.. Rubbish pic but you get the idea...

Aha was speedo to be fair If I'd had more space and bravery I'm sure it would have got there though haha Those last few mph take a looonnggg time to happen! ;-) Thinking about it - when we did the feature big power cars were all still very expensive. It's only in the last few years prices for luxobarges like the 750i have taken such a dive. There are probably quite a few 150mph+ cars for sub £1000. It's having the nerve to keep the throttle down at such speeds on a car with 10+ year old components that becomes the challenge!
