Hi, I am replacing the master brake cylinder on my 1980 morris marina as the bore is quite corroded. The only close replacement I can find is a delphi tandem type with a 20.6mm bore. The original on my car was a tandem type with a 19mm bore. Would this be okay as a suitable replacement or is it likely to have an effect on the braking? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Regards

Larger bore = better braking?

did a similar thing on a golf , about 2mm increase
what it did was (as you would expect) move more fluid for a set pedal movement , but instead of a better feel or more braking power it made the pedal feel wooden and dead
so yeah it might work , but might feel bad , i hated mine and had to swap it

Hi, thanks for the replies! I have had trouble for months with the master cylinder currently on the car and have had the seals changed etc. The problem is that an exact match of these girling types are no longer made, the only one that I could find was the 20.6mm type. I have seen people advertising with recon 19mm types for sale but at almost £400 it seems as if they price them because they know people will not have another choice, so I would rather find an alternative as I can't justify spending that amount on one. Hopefully the 1.6mm difference won't be too much. The Ford Capri uses some of the same brake components as my marina but uses a 21.6mm bore M/C so it will be interesting to see if it works okay. Regards

Have you priced up having your existing sleeved ? www.pastparts.co.ukIn fact if Past Part can't supply a new master cylinder then I think you might struggle anywhere else as I've found them very useful for obscure brake bits.

Pretty sure the owner's club is offering these refurbed with stainless sleeves now. I wasn't paying too much attention as they don't affect me, I know they do them for the Mk1/ Mk2 single line types & were looking at doing later ones too. No idea on price, they won't be especially cheap but I'm sure you should have change from £400. They do them on exchange.

Hi, I have now managed to source a NOS master cylinder for the Marina. After fitting and bleeding I am having problems with the brake pressure. I have barely any pressure, the car can only just hold on the driveway with the pedal full down but when driving pumping the pedal is the only way that it is stopping. The brakes hold okay if I build the pressure up and hold the pedal down after. I am having no trouble with sinking pedals etc. Looking around there is no fluid loss either at any part of the car. Does anyone know what I can look for? The master cylinder fitted is also identical to the old one. Cheers

How did you refill the system and bleed it? That sounds like there is air in the pipes. When filling a new master cylinder I fill the master cylinder reservoir, leave overnight with the cap loose, then refill the system using a pressure kit the next day. Never had any problems that way.
