I don't believe for a second it's a photoshop, rmad's 'unchopped' version simply looks all wrong and awkward perspective-wise. The angles of the roof and bonnet line are representative of where they would be at that height compared to the camera. Brought back down to 'stock height' they simply don't fit in with the surrounding objects. Cool your jets, tiger. All I'm saying is that one of the men who penned the Metro is saying it's nothing that was done in an official capacity. He said "it's photoshop" not me. Chris No need to cool anything, I wasn't attacking your post, I'm simply stating in my opinion I don't believe it's a Photoshop, it simply doesn't look right.

The image can be sharpened up - but the 'information' just isn't there to sharpen it to an extent that anything becomes any clearer. Chris - There's no way it's Photoshopped. I appreciate what the designer man says - but he's a 77 year old ex-car designer not a photo manipulation specialist. ;-) If it is a Photoshop, then it's an extremely clever one, and is a very peculiar hoax involving the originator leaving it on a small FB page, and then simply walking away. I'm all for strange conspiracies (Taman Shud anyone?) but this isn't one of them... I guess it's going to remain a mystery.

You can't clean that up enough to make it worthwhile.

If you give it the full on sharpening treatment, and squint, it looks like a little demonic face! Spooky!

^^ I´m sure it´s not a demonic face. It´s the face of jesus christ! The same as on that slice of toasted bread years ago! Now kneel down and pray! You've nailed it! it was a prototype Metro based Popemobile

Probably a small van(but can't think of one from the mid 80s) with those swage lines and short front wings. Why?Who knows, but locally a guy took a Mini Marcos and lengthened/widened/4 door it fitted Maestro running gear so anything is plausible if not obvious.

It's very bizarre, but definitely doesn't look photoshopped to me. May not be Austin at all, maybe some strange homebrew kit using a few Metro parts

Looks like the driver is in the middle of the car, so probably a wheel chair access vehicle, or a McLaren F1 mule.

I was hoping this would've been solved by now. I can't believe that if this was a real thing, then why have no more pictures of it surfaced? If I'd have seen it, like the guy who originally took the photo, I'd have grabbed my camera too, just for the oddity of the thing. Are we any closer to finding a solution?

Whatever it is, it's clearly a Metro! The parts and lines are all clearly from a Metro, albeit elongated where applicable.
It's highly unlikely to have been anything produced by Austin Rover though.
As it does look like the driver in in the centre of the car, I'd go with the idea that's it's some kind of car for a driver in a wheelchair. The badge does look like an AC badge, but it's too blurred to be anywhere near sure of that, although it would be a coincidence given the potential links to the AC Invacar.

A metrocab prototype?! (Maybe taking the word metro too literally)
An Austin / Rover prototype inspired by the Nissan Prairie?

At that time very few people would ever have had a camera with them and if they did they would have had to faff about winding the film on and other old fashioned activities. Even if someone did take a pic it would have ended up as a single sheet of paper which could have been lost or thrown away long ago. Its a surprise a picture has surfaced. My guess would be that any other pictures that exist would have been the makers pictures, maybe a mobility company or the like.

To me the reg looks like A955 MHO not A955 WHO DVLA brings up Registration number: A955 MHO ✗ Untaxed Tax due: 01 July 1993 MOT No details held by DVLA Vehicle details Vehicle make :AUSTIN Date of first registration :02 July 1984 Year of manufacture :1984 Cylinder capacity (cc) :1275cc CO₂Emissions :Not available Fuel type :PETROL Vehicle status :Not taxed Vehicle colour :WHITE Vehicle type approval :Not available Wheelplan :2 AXLE RIGID BODY Revenue weight :Not available Another point is this, if it was taxed until 1993, it stands to reason that it must have been in use up until the point, so that's a good few years for such an unusual vehicle to slip under the radar for so long!

I don't know how I've missed this thread up until now! Fascinating. I work with Photoshop / Photos most days as part of my job and I wanted to think that it's fake as it's just so top heavy and weird, but I've pressed pretty much every 'enhance' button I can think of and it basically checks out - no signs of stretching, cloning, or other optical manipulation. That really shows the double grilles much more clearly. I just can't see how it's a photo aberration, so it must be real. But it can't be real, because why would it exist? *head explodes* Imagine the work required to make one-off stretched door skins, wings, rear quarters etc etc ... Unless they are GRP or something. But why?

A metrocab prototype?! (Maybe taking the word metro too literally) An Austin / Rover prototype inspired by the Nissan Prairie? Certainly not a Metrocab prototype. They were Ford-based rather than AR. That thing certainly looks like it has Metro running gear. I can only assume that it's some sort of test mule for a vehicle that never went into production, possibly a Mule for the AR6??
