Description
For sale is my 1989 MG Maestro Turbo in British Racing green.
This is a very rare car, No. 354 of 505 built, and one of only 20 or so left on the road.
The car was built in conjunction with Tickford, who fitted the unique bodykit and decals.
Although the car was built in 1989 it wasn’t registered until 1991, hence the H plate. When this car was launched its performance was a step beyond anything that the competition had produced. But being a maestro granny chariot with a turbo engine bolted on, and with MG Rover’s famed reputation for snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, the car flopped. But 25 years on the car is an iconic piece of British motoring history, and it gets appreciative remarks wherever it’s seen.
I am a member of the MG ‘M’ Group and also the Tickford Owners Club and the car appears on their website.
I have owned this example for 4 years and I have used it as a summer weekend run and show car, so I have only put about 3000 miles on it. Being a modern MG/Rover enthusiast I have carried out some work to the car to keep it in good condition. It is in near original condition with only minor discreet modifications.
Due to time constraints it is not getting the use it deserves, and I would like it go to an enthusiast owner.
Details
The milometer has 133,000 on it, however the engine was replaced with a new one at 90,000 by a previous owner. It has mot.
The car drives absolutely lovely, real 80’s turbo hot hatch style, very responsive and blistering acceleration when you need it.
I have recently had 4 new tyres fitted.
All the suspension and steering has been overhauled with a new power steering rack, CV joints, ball joints, wheel bearings, new gas shock absorbers and springs.
Just had brand new battery fitted.
Modifications
There are some minor modifications to the car:-
Boost increased to 1 bar (14.5 psi)
Re-profiled carb needle to suit boost increase
Large alloy intercooler
K&N cotton OEM replacement air filter
1 inch lowered rear springs (front are standard)
Stainless steel exhaust
80’s boost gauge fitted over driver’s side air vent (doesn’t look out of place)
MGF alloy wheels
Ferrodo hard racing brake pads
Tickford badges
MG mud flaps
Logo car mats
Alarm and immobiliser
Engine and Gearbox
The engine is the 2 litre O series and is fitted with a Garrett T3 turbo. As stated the engine was replaced before I owned the car, it still feels very tight and lively, oil and filter replaced every year. Plugs, HT leads, distributer cap and rotor arm swapped with quality replacement items. Gearbox oil was replaced in 2012.
Interior
The interior looks fresh, and very retro in grey and red. I replaced the red seat piping and MG logos. I have black mg logo sear covers on to protect them.A couple of jobs that I haven’t had time to sort out yet is the temperamental central locking and rear passenger side window coming out of its winder when lowered. The original Philips radio cassette player is fitted and works perfectly.
Bodywork
The bodywork is generally in good condition, however there are some areas of rust bubbles that are starting to come through in the usual places where these cars tend to rust. However they are not too noticeable. The rear plastic roof spoiler has some paint loss due to the car cover I use rubbing it and also the roof and rear wing paint has faded,to be honest if this had a full blow over it would be immaculate.
Price
I am not in a hurry to sell this very rare car for a knock-down price, the asking price is £4000. I will throw in a load of spares including 3 replacement doors which are rarer than hen’s teeth at this price, don't barter or tyre kick its worth the money..
NO BOY RACERS,it's a British classic needs TLC I won't sell to anyone.
Included also is a bundle of paperwork of old history.
Just in case you are wondering about high insurance costs, the car is insured on a classic limited mileage policy and costs me only £125 a year.
