Hi I’m Fritz,
I’m from glorious Devon and this is Green Car, my MSA Sports Libre spec - Hillclimbing and Sprinting - BMW R1100GS motorcycle powered 1987 Citroen 2cv6 Bamboo. With a limiter now set at 9200rpm he is currently churning out approx 200bhp per tonne.
Standard 2cv6 = flat twin, boxer motor = 602cc = 28bhp
Green Car V2.0 = flat twin, boxer motor = 1100cc = 90/100bhp
Top speed currently unknown as their is excessive front end lift at over 115mph, rendering steering ineffective.
Why a 2cv?
This was my first car, I bought it when I was 16 (14 years ago!) because it was cheap to buy (£800 with new floors and sills and a new galvanized chassis), cheap to insure (sub £1000 as a learner!) and very cheap to fill up!
I learnt to drive in it, passed my test in it and have been through 3 sets of floors, 2 sets of sills and a few girlfriends with it.
It was my only car until half way through university at which point I was doing 25,000 miles a year in it with a home made roof rack kayaking & mountain biking all over the UK.
In 2009 it had once again rotted out a set of floors and was starting to go just about everywhere else body wise (poor quality Portuguese steel! - yes I know it's a french manufacturer but this later ones were made in Portugal), it sat in the garage for a few years until it came out again for the bodywork to be restored……..but what to use it for……?
Why the BMW motor then?
Cheap easy horsepower this weighs 12kgs more than a stock 2cv motor (so not upsetting the sublime handling) with twice the capacity and 3 times the power, it also revs to 9200.
It had to be a flat twin/boxer design as I wanted the same engine and exhaust noise and, crucially, to open the bonnet with Mum present and for her not to notice the difference to the 602cc Citroen boxer engine originally fitted.
Here are a couple of pictures from back in the day at uni..
I decided he should have a bit of an upgrade
And a couple of more recent shots, here at Prescott & Gurston Down.
Fancy some pictures from the most recent build up until now?
I thought so…
Engine
BMW R1100 GS motorcycle engine - approx 90/100hp, limiter is set to 9200rpm (90mph at 6200rpm)
Sparrow Automotive conversion kit (crank adapter, bellhousing spacer, all mountings etc)
When first mounted up before additional cooler, fan and the MSA spec gear.
L200 oil cooler, Mocal Heavy Duty lower oil cooler with ducting from slotted front bumper, Kenlowe electrical fan with heat sync switch from Range Rover ECU box
2ltr OBP Catch tank, OBP Swirl Pot
Facet fast road low pressure fuel pump, Bosh high pressure fuel pump, cut down 2cv racing FIA Spec filler neck.
Stack oil temperature sender, Stack speedo sensor with pickups on driveshaft. Custom Sparrow/Barbour exhaust running two mini rear silencers with a side exit.
Custom silicone inlet hoses and Pipercross Filters, Wunderlich cam covers & oil filler assembly – it’s current evolution prior to supercharging.
Gearbox & Braking
2cv box with dyane ratio, baffled and 2cv racing inlet shaft seal modification, dice gearknob
Ami Super slotted wheels banded by 1.5 inches running Yokohama 175/65/15. I need to change these to something stickier but what would you suggest? In this size I can't find anything but looking at Toyo R888 or Yokohama AD08 they are made in 185/55/15 - which should fit and not look too out of place??
Brakes rebuilt - front is running 10mm longer pads from a GS – standard front inboard discs, like an F1 car
Suspension
170% stiffer springs produced by springcoil (soon to be upgraded to 300%+), much beating with the lowering stick, aircraft grade aluminium spacers produced by Sparrow Automotive, custom AVO adjustable shocks, Longer tie rod ends, cut and turned front arms
5 degrees of negative camber in rear arms - wheels just fit in.
Steering
Track rod end grease nipple nuts, uprated steering rod adjusters
Still keeping it real and rolling on kingpins.
2nd set of steering arms - bent the first set getting my time down at Gurston Down - jumping racing curbs at 80mph
Interior
Stripped interior with MSA Sports Libre Spec full 6 point roll cage with head rest plate for driver – now with foam pad!
Custom dashboard with full suite of Stack Motorsport gauges, including Stack Monster Tacho with shift light set at 7200rpm. Painted in crackle black the same as Maserati Cam covers.
Another view of the interior - sorry about the sun glare. Yes I kept the original roll back soft top... bro's gotta keep cool when cruising in the summer ehh.
Electrical cutoff panel on floor in-between front seats with switch for Guns and a push button start
Kirkey Racing lightweight vintage aluminium bucket seats with leather padded inserts, Sabelt 6 point harnesses
Sparrow Automotive seat frames mounted through the chassis and floor plates with Titanium bolts
OMP White edition fire suppression system, two outlets in cabin and two in engine compartment, Lightweight Odyssey Gel battery relocated to behind passenger seat in containment box
Interior fire suppression control.
Custom US sourced electrical heater with Henshaw custom ducting - currently blanked off for hillclimbing
Bodywork & Chassis
Restored by Graham at The 2cv Workshop in South Hill, Callington, replacement Wills Galvanised chassis, sand coloured Matts soft top, Exterior fire suppression switch and battery cutoff switches
Smaller rear bumper, front bumper slotted for extra cooling to front lower oil cooler.
Rear Gradulux blind
Front burt strutt (for hillclimbing/sprint timing systems)
Fuel tank guard plate & recessed fuel filler
Rear wing strengthening removed for more room for wheels
Takata Speedhunters Ltd Ed tow straps front and rear
Rear tailgate conversion (so I can get race gear, shopping & mountain bikes inside…)
Narrow front headlight bar, LED foglight recessed into narrow rear bumper, yellow headlight bulbs, clear front indicatiors, stainless headlight peaks, indicator imbellishers and rear light surrounds
Plans for next spring
Probably some stuff I have missed.
