As the title, wondering if anyone is has experience of transferring cherished plates? But there's a complication. I've bought the car with the plate I want but the car has been off the road for a few years. The V5 is in my name now so stage one is complete.
Form what I've read you can only transfer a number plate from a Taxed car or one that has been SORN for less than 12 months.
I looked looked through DVLA site and can't find any specific info if the car has been off the road. So I gather to get the plate I need to return the car to the road. I don't think it will take much, so MOT is stage two.
But I presume then I'll need to Tax it. and to do that I'll need to insure it. Am I right so far?
The thing is once I've got the plate I don't need the car, I guess it will be allocated an alternative number so I can then sell it on. Any idea on the time scale to get the plates swapped?
And do I have to go through the motions of Taxing and insuring it? or is there any way around this?
Could I get a temp insurance, a few days.... to get it to the MOT station and back etc. Or is that not long enough for the process to go through.
And will there be any other checks required? VIC or anything. The car has never not been written off, just a long time since it's last MOT.
The car never failed an MOT, the last one just expired and the car was laid up and given up on. The brakes need work but I've got everything I need, and a bit of welding but again that's no bother.
Any pointers would be helpful. thanks.
