The launch of the Debonair, in 1964, by motorcaravan manufacturer Dormobile was an immediate success, but at £1195,
a pricay one.
For its day the Debonair was an advanced van, made of fibreglass and with accomodation for four it was a real home from home.
Mechanically , the Debonair is a standard long-wheelbase Bedford CA, with a 1600cc engine and four speed column gearshift.
However, onto this well-proven platform a larger, fibreglass body was grafted.
With its 6ft headroom, this meant an increase in space over the standard van.
There is ample sleeping space for 4 adults, provided by two double beds; one up front and another at the back.
In the cab area, the driver's and passengers' bench seat slide and fold according to whether you are travelling, cooking or sleeping.
At the back, the dinette cushions combine, and by using the tabletop they form the second double.
In the middle section of the van, a unit housing sink, storage and fridge ectends almost to the toilet compartment (currenty used as a cupboard), leaving a small walkway between.
Further towards the front of the van, there is a cooker with two burners, grill and oven, and abundant storage space in the form of cubby holes.
A large wardrobe is also fitted.
The toilet compartment doors aren hinged, allowing the front and rear of the van to be completely seperate from each other.
On the road, the Debonair's performance can best be described as 'leisurely, with cruising being comfortable at 45-50mph on A-roads and country lanes.
Handling has been improved by the fitment of modern radial tyres all with a good amount of tread remaining.
