1990 Phase 1.5 1400 XS

MOT Dec/2016
I bought the car earlier in the year from a fellow member of the Peugeot Sport Club, who had bought the car for his son, but he didn’t like ‘old’ cars. It was totally standard.
After owning for about a month, the front driveshafts began to knock and leak a little oil from the boots, so I decided to change a few bits.
I bought some 1.6 GTI hubs from a member of the 205GTIDrivers Forum.
I had brand new wheel bearings fitted to these. I decided to go with the 1.6 GTI hub so I could fit better brakes to the car.
I then sourced some Bilstein B6 front struts from another 205 Guy I know, they came already built up with 40mm (ish) lowered springs, brand new top mounts and bearings.
I bought some 1.6 GTI calipers second hand and then bought brand new discs and used some scrubbed in Mintex 1144 front pads.
Managed to also find some new old stock ‘GKN’ Driveshafts, about the best you can get, very reliable shafts.
All of this was then fitted to the car, but there was an issue with both calipers, one bleed nipple snapped and one didn’t seem to work correctly.
So I bought two calipers, both new old stock, a bit grubby but essentially new. I swapped over the pad carrier from the old calipers and re-fitted.
So at this point its had
1.6 GTI Hubs with new wheel bearings
Bilstein struts, lowered springs, new top mounts and bearings.
NOS 1.6 GTI Calipers
New 1.6 GTI Discs
1.6 GTI Mintex 1144 pads
NOS GKN Driveshafts
Peugeot driveshaft oil seals
Peugeot gear oil
Although the front of the car sits lower, the stance looks nice, I haven’t played with the rear beam at all.
It was running on the original 13” steels with the skinny tyres.
It now runs Citroen C5 Steels, refurbed in Anthracite with 195/50/15 Michelin Pilot Sport 3s, approx. 4/5mm tread.
There was no stereo in the car when I got it, so I bought the new style ISO lead so to retain the original wiring and not cutting anything. It does have a stereo at present but will not come with one.
Inside the rest of the car is original, it starts well, on a really cold day you have to use a bit more choke than normal.
On to the bad things.
There is a small surface rust area on the near side rear quarter, it used to have a full length lower quarter decal on the car, but it was old and cracked. Water had got behind it and started to effect an area. It didn't look too bad under the sticker, but once the sticker was taken off it lifted some of the paint. I used kurust on the affected area and then some Peugeot cherry red touch up paint. It’s not a good colour match, but is on an area away from main view and has just stopped it from getting any worse. If I remember correctly, under the rear seat, there is a small 20p size hole (that sort of size). I haven’t done anything with it.
There is only 1 key with the car and it’s not an original but a copy. So it can get a bit sticky in the drives door lock.
Unfortunately it doesn’t seem to work in the boot lock, so doesn’t lock. I’ve tried a few times but it’s not having it. I don’t know whether someone in the past has changed the bootlock and not had a key for it, or whether this non-original key just doesn’t like that lock. The passenger door lock works too but the little flap that covers the key entry has been damaged. I’ve looked around for a full lock set but they’re pretty tough to find unless you spend over £100. The petrol cap works find off the key, so does ignition.
Body is ok on the car, there is no damage/rust etc, just being red it’s succumbed to paint fade. There are two paint laquer peel marks on the bonnet and the nearside wing looks a different shade of red. If it’s a replacement wing then looks to have been done some time ago as there are some old pinstripe stickers on the car, or it’s been parked funny somewhere in it’s life.
I’m not trying to make it look like a bad body, it’s just honest. It’s aged but is structurally sound. I’ve covered around 700 miles in it since I bought it, performed very well throughout. It gets up to temp well and coped fine in motorway traffic.
I’ve got some old bits and pieces of paperwork, some stamped history and the V5, MOT cert etc. Viewings at the weekend are best.
