It is with a heavy heart that I put my 1991 Mk2 Golf Gti VR6 for sale. I’ve owned the car for just over three years. The car grabs masses of positive attention and it’s one of those cars where you don’t actually need the stereo - the VR6 roar sounds much better!
The VR6 conversion was completed professionally by Midland VW in 2011 to the tune of £1800 (excluding the cost of the engine itself). I'm led to believe the engine was sourced from a 65k mile car and has now covered only 72600 miles. I’ve only done just over 2500 miles in the three years I’ve owned the car.
The main spec is as follows:
Engine:
OBD1 2.8 VR6, (from mk3 golf)
Stainless de-cat,
Stainless Jetex cat back
Cone air filter
Vibra Technics front engine mount
Plugs (NGK), HT leads and water pump replaced around 3000 miles ago.
Suspension:
Coilovers all round,
Mk3 wide track (5 stud)
Brakes:
VR6 288mm up front
Standard mk2 rear discs
Some braided hoses
Wheels:
9x16 professionally built banded steel wheels powercoated black
195/45x16 tyres recent rear tyres – all have good treads
Body:
3 door
Solid black
Electric windows
Manual sunroof
Central locking
Pressed metal number plates
Interior:
Standard GTI seats in good condition
Re-trimmed inside sunroof lining
Mk3 VR6 dials in mk2 dash (original clocks from VR6 donor, with correct VR6 mileage showing)
Nardi type steering wheel
Genuine mk2 parcel shelf with no holes.
I also completely replaced both door membranes around 18 months ago. During the job, I filled the door cavities with fresh waxoil whilst they were easily accessible.
The car has MOT until May 12th 2016. About 12 months ago I replaced the original coilpack – a common fault with the OBD1 VR6s. Recently I’ve had the car serviced, with oil, oil filter and fuel filter replaced in September. I also had the fuel pump replaced at the same time as the original had tired seals. The car’s only covered just over 100 miles since. I have various receipts to go with the Mk2 and some previous MOTs from the last few years. It comes with two VW logo keys.
I contacted the DVLA shortly after I bought the Mk2 and now have a full printout of all of the cars owners details since it was first registered in 1991, which I will hand on to the new owner. It makes interesting reading; it turns out the car was an accountants company car for the first couple of years on the road!
As you can probably tell by this point, the Mk2 has been my fun/weekend car and not my daily driver. As a result, it’s not done many miles in my three years of ownership. This is my main reason for finally deciding to sell it – it deserves to be used more often than it is. It’s been a really hard decision to reach this point and I’m getting the feeling I’m going to regret selling… however my loss will be the new owner’s gain. It’s a solid Mk2 with a properly sorted VR6 setup, in the best colour. It attracts admirers wherever you take it.
Points of note:
Cable on drivers seat tilt handle not working, although seat can still be tilted; headlining could do with some attention; driver’s door card slightly loose; rear exhaust silencer needs tweaking as it knocks when going over bumps; chip in windscreen, although not MOT fail and hasn’t worsened during my ownership; paintwork on bonnet crazed in places, engine slightly lumpy when cold; wheels would benefit from light freshen up (some kerbing on nearside rim edges). Please bear in mind it's a 1991 car and has general wear and tear reflecting this.
Genuine enquiries only please. Car is located in mid-Cornwall near the Eden project. Any other questions, just ask. Viewing thoroughly recommended and test drives welcome; relevant insurance evidence will need to be shown. Alternatively, I'm happy to drive the car to demonstrate to the potential new owner. Car is advertised elsewhere.
