About 8 years ago i worked with a chap who did banger racing . He had a dirty lock up in the middle of some woods and people would just ring him to get rid of cars , literally for a 14 mile radius . He got cars free or for no more than £50 , often old jags etc .
He said then he got £250 for each jag and £40 for each of the cats .
He would get up early in the morning to avoid the plod with his lorry loaded with 6 cars or so and come back with between £1000-1500 .
EVERY FRIDAY !!!!!!!

I remember going into the yard I'd always gone into for yonks. Popped out to the back to sort the cats out, I had 3 I think, anyway he cut the ends off and wrote me out a bill for £6, yup £2 per cat.
I refused, and drove down the road, less that 500 meters, to a yard I've used at work (we deal with stainless and have to weigh things ourselves when the lorrys cant get into is). I never used them personally because I didn't have an account. Out of disappointment I set an account up, weighed my cats in at £35 each and passed a comment to the guy that the other yard wanted them for £2 each. He asked if there was a que at the other place, I said no, he asked if there was one at his yard, well yes there was. He then said "that's because we pay proper prices".
Ever since I've used that yard and always been laid a far better price. Never thought there would be that much of a difference between yards, but there is.

Today at a 'recycling facility' that normally pays more than your normal scrapyard a Ford KA £25. Vauxhall Vivaro £37 if you took if to them. If you have a Vivaro then either list as complete on EBay or break it yourself, they are very good breakers.

Nowhere to store it so the owner had to get rid of it that afternoon otherwise I would had kept it and got a cheap engine to put in.

I wouldn't advise the engine route, there are quite a few variations and some are rarer than others. There is a Renault Specialist that sells refurb engines that have a good rep but they come at a price. In this instance your better off just listing the whole van on Ebay as Spares or Repairs as there are a lot of people out there looking for them!

I read and understood it the first time. I was responding to the latter part of your sentence.

This is half the reason I have out 'old' 2006 Astra 1.9 cdti 150 estate on the drive after the cambelt snapped, we simply didnt have the money for a garage to repair at the moment, so ended up getting a car on finance instead, not what we wanted but the car has done near 200k miles but after spending £2k on it last year savings were wiped out. At least this way I can fix it slowly as the girlfriend likes it more that the 2012 Astra 2.0 cdti we just bought. I suppose the breakers price of £200 wasn't all bad in the grand scheme of things.
I can't comment as my BMW has been in the garage for 5 yrs and hasnt moved!

If the Astra is a 6 Speed the gearboxes do good money on Ebay £500, better than £200 thats for sure, so you could break it too Turbo, Injectors, Alternator, Starter if all good will see for good money too, and thats before you start on everything else! (Doors, Tailgate, Bonnet, Wings, Wheels & Tyres, Wiper Motors, Lights and all the mechanical bits!)

Yes it is the six speed, it was the gearbox that cost all the money last year, when it was reconditioned, and a new flywheel and clutch fitted. It was booked in for the cambelt the week after it sadly snapped!

Put the box, flywheel and clutch on Ebay for a whack of cash, get the buyer to remove it Then break the rest if you have somewhere to park it up. It does pay to break!

Really? I'd personally remove it in the quickest way if I was the buyer that would either be the gas axe through everything or petrol cut off saw, I doubt you would get many buyers wanting to pay top dollar then curse word about removing it in someone's drive....

I'm currently in a similar position ;
I've got an X reg 406 HDI estate who's MOT runs out in January and am in two minds what to do with it. It's in good shape body and engine wise, but has a couple of silly electrical faults which let it down. I reckon for the MOT it'll need a front droplink or two, some discs/pads, poss engine stabiliser mount, poss shock and maybe some flexi's replacing, which doesn't sound too bad, but with work/family being what it is at the moment I have literaly no spare time to do the work myself and it's economically not really viable to get someone else to do it.
One option was to let my local breaker have it, but they offered £60, even with the spare set of alloys thrown in, which is what the wheels/tyres are worth IMHO, so now it's either sell it with 3 months ticket as a running project/parts hauler/winter hack or break it myself over a few months as it's got a few good bits like a mint Rapier interior, towbar, newish injector pump, new full exhaust etc etc ?

Trouble with breaking cars is you need somewhere suitable to store it or else your drive resembles a traveller site after they have moved on....

I sold a van engine a few months back, did it a bit cheaper on the basis they would remove it and drop the gearbox for me and they were happy to do it one saturday morning.
