You are cordially invited to the preview opening of
'petrolhead'
on Friday 19th November at
CentreSpace Gallery, Leonard Lane, off Corn Street, Bristol
Between 7.30 and 10pm.
Petrolhead is the culmination of the whole bus racing project....
it is the reason that akciddento came to be...
Over two years ago i decided that i wanted to find out what it was that made the VW dragracers do what they do, season after season, with poor facilities, in the rain, in Britain !
I wanted to know what it was in me that found it both so compelling and so suspicious. I'm not into cars (other than my dubs) but i admired the sheer perversity and bloody mindedness of making old VWs go fast in a country that just didn't seem geared up for dragracing.
It appeared blindly heroic, like the British and their sheds or Captain Scott taking ponies to the North Pole..
It seemed that these people were destined to either have the biggest trainset in town or go drag racing VWs. The only thing with Dragracing is that there is real danger of death...
PetrolHead, and akciddento by that token, started as a portrait project to take pictures of the racers, crews, marshalls, scrutineers, hangers on etc. ~To try and capture them doing what they do at all times of the day and night. To try and investigate what it was all about and perhaps to try and find out a little bit more about myself.
The project was supposed to be just for one season, three months or so, but has rolled into a monster of a project lasting nearly two years and almost consuming me in the process.
The second season of racing has ended for me and armed with tens of thousands of frames I have been filtering and processing and printing a small selection of the best portraits that convey what it is that I found on my journey down the quarter mile.
It's not a story of cars or spanners or macho bravado. For me it's a story of people. People from all manner of backgrounds and circumstances. People with all manner of reasons for doing it and all manner of ideas as to what it's all about.
People that I'm now proud to call my friends.
They're fantastic people and they're nutters, every single one of them.
