Evening all, I'm after some advice and experience.
I'm currently dash cam shopping for the other half, she was in a fairly heafty shunt earlier in the year and has been after one since. I can't get my head round the fact that decent looking ones can range from £20-£200!
Has anyone got one or used one that's any good? I had a cheap eBay one a few months ago and it was awful!
Cheers

I bought one very recently. I got the Mini 0806, after seeing generally excellent reviews and bought one on eBay from a UK seller for £85, and I'm really happy with it. You can see how I have it set up over on Dash Cam Talk

I have a mio mivue 518, cost around £60. Can't fault it other than the sound quality isn't great. My workmate has a transcend, which can also be had for aound £80, he loves it. Both seem to be good bits of kit. I did loads of research and came to the conclusion the cheap ebay ones are false economy.

I use a MieVue 538 - can't fault the unit itself, easy to use and good picture quality. It has a handy facility which means that it automatically records any kind of impact. I know it works because I recently went of a cattle grid and now have that recorded as an event.
It records your position via GPS, your speed, warns of speed cameras. Lifetime updates.
Two small niggles:
A) When they send me updates it defaults to the 3 series update and the first time I tried to update it failed. (It's simple when you figure it out, there's a link lower down the page which if clicked goes to the 5 series updates, but it's not terribly clear when you use it for the first time.)
B) On a motorway near us there is an A road that runs alongside it with a speed camera. It isn't clever enough to spot the difference so on the motorway it warns you of a 30mph speed camera.
On playback you realise what totally insane conversations you have whilst driving.

Got mine from Lidl about three months ago - takes an miniSD memory card, has the G-shock record function, a little battery and you can turn the sound recording off ..... the windscreen mount isn't brilliant but it was only £40.
You have to keep your eyes open though as they're not there all the time.

I got one from Halfords a few months ago, cant remember the make but it is their cheapest one which if ordered on line comes with the SD card for lees than £50, I have downloaded the footage a few times and the day time is really good quality but night time only shows whats in your headlight beams, I'm going to upgrade soon for one that has better night vision. The SD card records in short segments for one hour then overlaps, it has frozen once but that was in a high security area so might had been affected by interference from other devices. it has an emergency frame capture and a photo button which I haven't tested. for a basic cam I would say its suitable. The added bonus is if it does go wrong they will change or refund on the spot.

Dad has a halfords jobby (Nextbase) whilst I've got a roadhawk dc-1.
Some have gps like mine so I can see where I was at the given time of an event.

Ihave one that cost little .As the council thought it a good idea to turn street lights off at 12 midnight .I fixed one up in my bedroom window and purchased a 240 volt power pack to plug in the wall socket ,then i plug the cigarette leed in to that bingo 24 hour watch over the car night and day .Remove it from the window plug it to the computer and watch what went on that night. I did find out the woman above was taking a chap in on a night and ,well i will leave you to work that out .
