A few weeks ago, I replaced all four prop UJs then, back end of last week, I was getting a vibration which felt suspiciously like a prop UJ! Yesterday I had a gander underneath and unearthed this... As you can see, the circlip is still there but the bearing cup and, obviously, all the needle rollers, are missing. Anyone seen the like before? How can the cup escape from the circlip unless it suffered catastrophic failure and broke apart? The reason I'm asking is that whilst I've thrown a new (Bearmach) front shaft on, my rear shaft obviously still has two similar UJs. They look okay at the moment, but...

Hi, Yes, I have seen it before. If you look it looks like the 'drum' of the cup is still there behind the circlip. I would guess something has got between the spider and the bottom of the cup and cracked it. In use it has broken up and fallen out with the rollers following suit.

So what you are saying Colin, very tactfully of course, is that the numpty who fitted it got it all wrong and left some cack or some such in there? Hmm, not beyond the bounds of possibility I suppose If that is the case, then I'm reasonably happy that it was "operator error" rather than a duff UJ. After all, the spare I've got to fix it up again is the same as the dead one. I'll just be more careful this time.

When it was installed by a Neanderthal, one roller was out of place and it landed up between the cup and the cross. It mullers the cup in short time. If, said Neanderthal had moved the joint all around by hand before fitting the prop shaft ,it would have become apparent there was something amiss
Just don't ask this Neanderthal how I know these things, lol!

Okay then, it's unanimous. Definitely operator error If I remember, the needles did try to make a bid for freedom one one of them and by the look of things, I obviously didn't spot the errant one. Chalk it up to experience. As I said, I would rather it was me than a failed UJ though, as the one I have spare is the same type. Saying that, the rear prop joints have been fine. Thanks guys.
