I'm sure I'm going to regret this, but up for sale is my J reg 1991 309 GTi. If you're looking for a mint low mileage garage queen then you're best looking somewhere else!
I bought this car 4 or 5 years ago not long after it was restored (I've a bunch of pics from that restoration). I paid a lot of money for it back then, as the previous owner had spent a lot of time and money on the car (it was in a car mag at one stage I'm sure). Since then, I've basically gone through the whole car again.
The shell has possibly done around 144K miles. I can't guarantee this mileage because it gone through a number of different 'stages' in its life and I think the previous owner got is as basically a shell. I've only had it MOT'd a few weeks ago, and as always, it sailed through. It is currently taxed so a serious buyer can test drive (with proof of insurance).
It has a 2.0 engine out of a Xsara VTS (167bhp)
5 speed Xsara VTS gearbox
DTA S40 ECU
Larger injectors
Magnecor custom ignition leads
Machined throttle body
Smoother + port matched inlet manifold with PTFE gasket
Lightened flywheel
Helix paddle clutch
Bilstein Group A rear dampers, Group N fronts. Lowering springs approx 30mm. Forest spec rear torsion bars (larger than standard).
Xsara VTS steering rack (2.6 turns)
Peugeot sport front lower arms
AB motorsport uprated driveshafts
Solid rear axle (rear) mounts
Rear axle is perfect and has recently been checked.
307 HDi front brakes. New handbrake cables and one new rear caliper.
It was rolling roaded after the ECU installation and achieved 160bhp at the wheels. It's had the manifold and throttle body since then. Add a better inlet cam and remap and it should achieve 200 (flywheel) bhp.
The interior is a little spartan, as I partially stripped it for roll cage fitment. The seats are functional but not in particularly great condition. I do have the rear seats and fittings if anyone wants to make it eligible for road rallies. The plastic dash surround has cracked as many do. There are plenty of rattles and squeaks! You forget them once you start making progress...
Bad points:
The panel I used to blank off the sunroof isn't particularly great. It does the job and it's white. That's about it, although it doesn't let any water in (thanks to silicone!)
Although the paint cleans up very well, I think it would benefit from a light body restoration to keep it fresh. I bought an expensive car cover which managed to take paint off some edges and corners.
I shot blasted and repainted the passenger gutter rail last year (aerosol can job, and you can tell) the drivers side needs doing to prevent any serious repairs.
The clutch is pretty unforgiving and I would probably change the plate for an organic one instead of the paddle currently fitted.
The engine doesn't idle well when cold. This is mostly due to ECU mapping. I've fitted a Bosch idle valve instead of the original stepper motor which wasn't compatible with this ECU. It idles itself within a couple of minutes and is fine when warm.
The starter motor can be a little lazy. I opted to buy a proper but second hand Valeo starter, as opposed to a cheap, new unbranded remanufactured motor. Won't bother doing that again. Got the old starter but the solenoid is dodgy.
One of the front spot lamps isn't working. The electical connector has corroded. I have a brand new genuine lamp, but is part of the 'spares' package mentioned below (it's not included in the sale.)
This has definitely been an 'ongoing project' for me and it has plenty of scope, depending on what you want to do with it. I've used it on many track days and it's been brilliant fun. It has the best suspension I've experienced - forgiving on narrow country lanes but very good indeed on track. The engine is a corker and makes a brilliant noise when on full chat. Brakes are also great - I replace them every year for the cheapest stuff from my motor factors (about £100 for front & rear) and they are excellent.
Last year, I shot blasted under the boot and rear wheel arches and stripped and cleaned the front wheelarches. I put fresh stone-chip on. The paint I used under the boot hasn't sealed quite as well as I expected and so there's a couple of patches of rust appeared. It just needs wire brushing and repainting again. It's probably done about 500 miles since this work.
I don't use the car as much as I should and I don't want to see it stood for months on end again (it didn't move between November and August). It's not getting any younger and I can't find sheltered storage for it. I also have another project that needs my attention, so the poor Pug tends to be at the bottom of the list.
There's a bunch of spares that I have. They are not included in the asking price, but I'm sure an agreement can be reached. Briefly:
2x extra sets of wheels one with Toyo R888's mounted, the other set has R888's unmounted. All are 1.9 GTi factory wheels.
2x genuine front wings + slam panel
Tran-X plated LSD, was fitted to the car but is set too aggressive. Less than 500 miles on it.
Standard Xsara VTS ECU + wiring loom
I'm sure there's more stashed away somewhere.
I'm asking £2800.

Car is located on the Isle of Anglesey.
