Well, this year’s RRG was fantastic. It’s the fourth one I’ve been to, so I’m used to how it works but for me it was definitely different to previous years. For a start, it was the first time I had brought something interesting to park up in (the Polo was cool, but not exactly rare or interestingly modified) Yes, the adorably ugly little Acty finally made it to a Gathering. You can read about its struggles here
Another major difference this year for me was with other RRers. I’m not exactly the most outwardly confident person, I’m often quite anxious around people I don’t know, or people I admire and look up to. I have to be pretty comfortable with people, or very drunk to really loosen up and be me, so it was amazing to discover just how difficult it was to walk around the campsite without bumping into people I knew and could chat to. For me, RRG is about the people as much as it is about the cars, so it feels great to be able to consider myself part of the community.
The other defining feature of this year, as with most people, was the weather. It didn’t affect the camping side of things too much, but I spent a lot less time on the showground than normal, and caught maybe only 20 minutes of hill action. I managed to see a lot of the cars on the showground, but didn’t really hang around taking in details or chatting to owners much. As a result I didn’t take many photos of the show itself.
Still, as there are so few picture threads going up at the moment I thought I’d chuck up some of my shonky phone shots, most of which were taking on the campsite. There are a few I havn't included in my photobucket
Loved this Vitara. I’d seen it on here, but those graphics look so much better in real life. Absolutely beautifully executed and very different. These wide versions look great lowered too.
Carl’s ever evolving Celica and MPV (can’t remember what they are called). The new arches have taken the Sleeka it to another level and it sits so well on its mega wide wheels.
There were a few Americans taking up a considerable amount of campsite, all with oodles of wallowy American charm. I’d seen the patinated Ford estate at a couple of local meets, and had fallen in love when I last saw it. It’d been a while since I’d been blessed by its presence so it was fantastic to see it in the flesh again. From what I remember it makes a rather pleasing noise too.
Acres of beige velour, flawless paint and sitting on the floor. Lovely. Only 19k miles too
A couple of Lada’s, one of the previously unloved cars that RR seems to have taken under it’s wing in the UK.
‘Scene’ cars. Don’t care. Both very nice
“That Mini looks…different” Immaculate Minus
What do you use to polish a Series One Landy? A grinder, obviously. Tak is awesome
What do you use to clean a VW Bay Window? Sandpaper, and paint
What do you use to kill a wasp sat on the bonnet of your massive Defender? Big block of wood and brute force. Yeah, not all those dents are from offroading
Very smart MG Little Person. See if you can spot what I spotted on the inside
Celica Supra looking shiny. Loved the colours
MGBGTMX5 with maybe a few cues taken from modified JDM coupes. One of my favourites. Will finish (start) mine one day
So glad the Claymore beast was in attendance. It’s not often you get to see a project like this progress each year, one of the RRG icons
M3 engined kitcarofsomesort. Can’t imagine it weighs much either.
Model A pickup with flathead V8. Hot rod heaven
Cool transmarque ‘Lingo on 406 Coupe wheels. Need a roof rack like that on the Acty!
Car shows lack variety these days
Those are some arses
On the Saturday few of us went for a wander around the paddock. These two guest cars were mindblowing. Where else can you walk right up to machinery like this and have a good long perv, with virtually no one else around.
The Wurth E21 has so much presence. All that homemade aero is mighty impressive, and my God does it look good on its new hoops.
The Spider. As misterbob put it, steampunk on four wheels.
Saturday evening saw one of the most beautiful storm clouds I have ever seen turn the site into a mud pit, but many beers were had and the rain was forgotten. Then it was time for the Sunday show. Like I say, I didn’t manage to get many photos, but from what I saw the quality of machinery on display was fantastic, as always.
I MISS MY POLO!!! This one stole my heart. Sat perfectly, with proper sidewalls, and an engine setup very similar to what I had in my garage, never to be fitted. I’d have happily taken this home in a heartbeat.
Alfa coupe looking beyond stunning. Jesus these are good looking cars, and the owner of this one has gone and made it even more heart stopping.
“Do the doors! Do the doors!” Didn’t see anyone open the doors unfortunately but it still looked great.
This was perfect. So cute, and the mods suited it down to the ground
It said 1.1 Popular on the back, but I’m guessing that’s a lie. Anyone know what it’s running?
Very cool P6. I think these are a difficult car, aesthetically, and not many look right. This one did
While there were several stupendously modified examples of the breed next to it, this standard example caught my eye the most. I think it’s because it was a standard example on the poster above my resistant materials teachers desk that I used to gaze at while ignoring the lesson. This car might be the reason I’m not great at welding
Cressida win. Banded steels, generous drop, perfect.
Every BMW owner longs for these stripes, right?
Waiting their turn to burn some rubber
Finally one of my favourite photos, not because I’m pleased with how it looks, but because there is a battered 101 and huge tyres, and a racing helmet behind the wheel.
Came home and couldn’t sleep with all the engine noises still blaring in my head, as well as conversations about cars and modifications I’d had over the weekend. Can’t wait for next year
