The good and bad mods thread got me thinking about tyres.
i'm hopefully getting my car sorted completely before xmas, and want to put some really decent tyres on , just wondered what this rich vein of quality information can suggest.
No crossplys or anything- just a high quality, dependeable radial tyre that will do the car proud
So, what does everyone suggest? I'm asking which brand (rather than what size or profile or anything) Is there one to particularily avoid? Are some premium makes overpriced for their performance? What do you use on your car?

In the past my Imps have had Yokohamas, Pirellis, and some other stuff, but since my Imp won't be finished for a while yet, or that's what I thought months ago anyway, I never bothered to buy expensive tyres, so it's running Ceats at the moment, which I have to say are perfectly adequate for the job, and haven't let me down once. Very much better than crossplys as well.

I'm terrible with tyres - usually go for the cheapies (normally 'cos I can't afford decent brands!). I've found budget ones to be OK, but then I've never really owned a car that warrants high speed performance or anything! A good supplier I've found is www.mytyres.co.uk - I got some budget 215/40/16's for £40 each! They do the big brands too at good prices. Either them or www.blackcircles.co.uk. They're cheap too!

the biggest difference to handling ive made has been tyres... lowered it 1 1/2 " and yokos all round... made a hell of a difference !

Ive tried Yokohama, Pirelli and Bridgestone on Minis
The pirellis were noisy, grip was poor but they lasted ages The Yokohama grip like a toffee on a blanket but wear out quick Bridgestones were the bast all round but ive gone back to Yokos (what the hell there only £100 a set)

yokohamas are the best in my experience but don't last long. woo sungs will last forever and are chear. i had some on my first mini and did a track day at donnington, everytime i came in they had picked up all the soft rubber from all the rich peoples racing tyres. i left with more rubber than i turned up with!

Dunlop FM901's or Dunlop Direzza's That's what I wanted to hear. I always did like Dunlop Tyres. Has anyone seen what they've done/are doing to the old Fort Dunlop just off the motorway at Birmingham?

Had Avon's before & they were OK, but switched size & went to Bridgestone Potenza's a couple of years back & I've gotta say they are the best tyres I've driven on!!!! They've lasted well, grip well wet & dry, look nice, directionals.......

I have tried various Michelins (MXV3A, Energy, Pilot), and loved them. They are made of a soft compound, so they offer great traction, and offer unbelievable handling in the wet. But they wear very fast and their prices are rather steep.
I have also tried Bridgestone (B330, RE720) and found they have a rather hard compound, which means they lack traction when they're cold. But they seem to perform nicely when warm and wear far slower than Michelins. Prices are also high, though.
This morning, I fitted a set of Yokohama S306's to my BX... I originally wanted to fit Michelins, but couldn't afford them at 270 euros a set. My first impressions of the 180-euro Yokos are very positive, as they seem to have a soft compound and handle very nicely.
I would personally avoid fitting 'budget' brands, since most of them use very hard compounds (for increased mileage, which makes them dangerous on slippery roads) and their tread designs are outdated (aquaplanning is NOT fun !).

My Zs has very soft compound Yoko's all round.
The grip like billy-o but the wear rate seems very high. Still at 185/60 13 size they aren't exactly expensive, certainly not enough to warrent getting a budget brand.
Got cheapy cheapo's on the Golf at the mo as I needed 4 225/50 14's and it kind of added up. Haven't noticed a real change in the handling but Mk4 Gti's aren't great anyway and I never really drive it that fast!
