This exceptionally well looked after and rare Volvo 740 TD was supplied new by Gilesgate Volvo of Hexham and serviced religiously clocking up barely 3000 miles between services. The original handbooks and service books accompany Sven along with a Volvo cassette discussing the virtues of the new 740! He also still bears the original dealer stickers and number plates.
FSH with receipts up to 76000 miles. The story goes that once the owner died his wife took over the car and wasn't quite as fastidious with the paperwork.
This was a very rare and expensive car when new and one of the fastest production diesel cars of its time.
It was designed by Jan Wilsgaard and became affectionately nicknamed 'The Brick' by an adoring public eager for a big, safe and very Swedish alternative to the woeful build quality of British Leyland or the Autobahn storming BMW's and Mercedes.
The Volvo 740 is quite simply one of the finest cars ever made, quintessentially Swedish and a super comfortable everyday drive cool enough to feature in a Human League pop video at the height of New Romantic electro-pop popularity! More recently Luther has chosen this car as his 'so out, it's in' daily drive in the cop series of the same name.
The sheer usability of the 740 made them the main stay of taxi drivers and chauffeurs from Belfast to Beirut.
Whilst people call them a barge, in fairness, they have a fabulous turning circle and once up to speed, mid range acceleration from the turbo diesel engine is very respectable on todays roads too.
Sven is completely original and does have the odd scratch here and there. However the panels are remarkably straight with very few stone chips to the bonnet and only one or two small blisters developing. The interior is in very good condition with no rips or tears and no cracks in the dashboard.
Most that are left are estates, the saloon, like this one is incredibly rare and to find one in this condition is even rarer still. To my mind this is the perfect modern classic as it combines comfort, speed and economy returning over 40 mpg.
I'm hoping Sven can find a sympathetic new home however if not I'll continue to enjoy him at weekends.
No swaps or silly offers please. However I may consider a part exchange for a classic of a similar age, particularly a Peugeot 305, BMW e28 or e34 or Renault 4 Mountain Goat.
