Have a 360 dodge lump here, would like to fit new pistons, rings, flexplate, maybe rods and front crank pulley.
I'd like to know roughly what ballpark price wise I'm looking at to get this all balanced? If it makes any difference, it's an external balance engine. Never delved this far into an engine build before and I'd like to do it right for once.

Hi, Pistons just need to be all the same weight, there are prescribed area to remove metal usually around the little end boss. Flexplate and front pulley should be fairly well balanced on their own, otherwise bolt them up on the crankshaft and get it all balanced. The rods are quite involved and time consuming to balance because you have to make them all weigh the same and each end has to be weighed individually. Without removing too much metal and weaken them too much.

I was under the impression that it is best practice to give the machinest the whole assembly in order to get it all bang on. As said, I want to do this right, this engine will get a lot of abuse. So, what do I need to realistically budget for all this work?

I paid £250 to have my straight six crank ground and balanced along with front pulley and flywheel. I did my own rods and pistons so can't comment on cost of that.
One thing I will suggest though, is that you check piston height before balancing them. You may need to skim the tops to eaqualise the compression heights.
