I've been after a 4x4 for a while but also want a camper. Guessing you can see where this is going.... Know there's Land Rover forward controls etc. But ideally want something either pre 60s to be MOT and tax exempt. Looking at unimogs a lot are claiming to be mot and tax exempt, but isn't this due to them being registered as "agricultural" or tractors? Doesn't this mean you can only use them for farm jobs and can only travel around a mile from the farm etc?! Also what license would be required? I'm only 23 and haven't got a Hgv license or anything, are they too heavy? Other idea is just to get a 4x4 pickup and get a demountable camper or something but where's the fun in that? I like big and different Jack

If like me you passed your test post 1997 (or so) then you'll be entitled to drive cars and vans upto 3.5 ton with no trailer. I don't have any knowledge about Unimogs, other than they're awesome, to know what weight the different models are. Tax exempt is 1973 or older.
Not sure on no MOT requirement but imagine it's much older than 1973!
I'm sure someone else will be able to give you a definitive answer tho.

What kind of roads/trips are you using it for? If you want to go faster than about 50mph then I don't think an old Unimog is going to cut it! FYI: www.unimogcentre.com/unimog404.html

Most Unimogs require HGV. Most you see on the road are registered as agricultural vehicles with all the restrictions of use that come with that. All Unimogs cost "an arm and a leg" to buy, run and maintain. They are slow and thirsty. Tyres are horrendous price.
I love them and went to look at an early ex military version for sale at a French disposal depot but found (a) HGV licence required (b) very expensive to buy in the first place

Finding a tax exempt unimog is fairly easy, but finding a pre 60s so it's legally mot exempt is a different story. Which is why the agricultural one being listed as mot exempt are interesting me.
I will currently be towing a tear drop trailer behind my corona so doubt I'd want to do more than 50 with that anyway haha
I'm mainly just want an expedition vehicle (fancy a vehicle ready for a zombie apocalypse haha)
I plan on keeping the vehicle well maintained anyway so I suppose spending £30 a year on an MOT isn't the end of the world! But really don't want to spend hundreds on tax for a second vehicle!

As long as you can prove it's being used as a camper you won't need HGV license. You may have to get it inspected at your local licensing centre.

What about a 4x4 Transit ? I've got a Mk2 but they did later ones. It wouldn't be difficult to convert one to a camper. If you really wanted to you could fit 4x4 running gear to a Mk1 Transit Camper then it would be tax free as well.

Hi, yes, you will need an HGV if only to stop long periods at the side of the road trying to explain to a policeman why you don't. The MOT exempt one you have looked at is probably MOT exempt because of the use it's being put to. It will require what's called a class 5 MOT which is the same criteria as a car test but it has to be done at a ministry testing station because of the size of the vehicle, if it fails they won't let you fix anything there so you will have to rebook. As said it will only do about 50mph and economy will probably be in single figures.
Having said all that they are brilliant bits of kit, I used to drive them for work and loved them, but I'm certain I wouldn't want to own one because of the costs and complications.

Dumb question and I'm thinking of the ones I see locally that look more like jcb fastracs, but can you MOT a unimog? Wouldn't it be like putting a tractor in for an MOT? Surely it would come under the special vehicles mot exemption?
If you can and If it is a camper then you could have it motd in the same class as a car as long as the testing station can physically do it.

I'm guessing they're all over the 3.5t MAM weight so you'll need a C1 licence, the MOT thing depends what its registered and used as, if you aren't using it as a tractor you do need MOT, which as its over 3.5t will be a hgv one. however, if they weigh enough under 3.5t and you don't plan to use it to carry much you can get them down plated, its common for motorhomes to be built on 4.2 or 5 ton chassis but be plated to 3.5t. this shows the opposite process, to free up some load carrying or towing capacity. www.southdownsmotorcaravans.co.uk/misc/motorhome_vehicleweights.php

It goes on the Maximum Authorised Mass. Between 3.5t and 7.5t you need C1 Over 7.5t you need C.
Does not matter now whether its goids or camper, it goes by weight.

I agree with the idea of a 101 instead of a Unimog - especially with a diesel conversion.

Yes I had looked into 101s before! I do love them having owned defenders etc I don't really want a series. I could deal with a 101 just for the cool factor

I agree with the idea of a 101 instead of a Unimog - especially with a diesel conversion. Cummins 4BT would be the business in that.
