So seeing as my daily may be dead I've been trolling the classifieds for interesting cars, you know just in case, and I found a 1989 Peugeot 405 Mi16 for sale and I have absolutely no experience with these cars. Or any Peugeot, as they kind of stopped selling cars in North America in 1991. So basically I'm looking for input as to how these things are to live with, reliability, and just how much I'll miss my 16v Jetta if that's what I go with.
Thanks!

awesome cars, not sure what spec an 89 will be other than will be the 1.9 alloy engine not the phase 2 2.0 iron block.
I guess being an american spec car it'll be ac and weird bumpers, low compression 148 bhp engine with a lambda sensor?
trim and body bits will be tricky to find, but general maintenance stuff is still easy to get.

Fantastic cars, would love one but most have had their engines nicked for 205s sadly. Brilliant chassis, handling like a big 205 but far more predictable, great ride, great steering. Engine is a peach especially the alloy block 1.9, which is basically a race-spec engine in euro trim with 160bhp. Great comfortable cruisers as well if a little low-geared for a big car. Gear change isn't great but besides that they're brilliant drivers cars.
As for Peugeots, curse word electrics and trim quality, but tough engines and fairly rust-resistant.

It looks like the bumpers would swap to European spec without issue, so I could go with those if I ever needed to. Are you sure about the compression? From the limited info I could find these needed higher octane so I just assumed it was emissions controls and maybe cams that accounted for the change in bhp.

cams are all the same profile, DFW engine had a lambda and knock sensor and different pistons, different keyway location on the pulleys altered cam timing.
