I'm selling my 1998 318i SE as I've just bought a 523i to waft around in. I've owned it since Feb this year and it's been a pretty good car considering it's done 149,000 miles!
The engine starts first time every time, however the idle is a bit lumpy most of the time. I have checked everywhere for air leaks and can't find any so something else is causing the lumpy idle. I've never bothered to look any further, instead just adapting my driving style around the issue. Once you get going the engine runs absolutely fine and doesn't pull too badly considering it's only got 114bhp! The gearbox goes into all gears nice and positively and performs with no funny noises. The previous owner put a new clutch in not long before I bought it however he didn't replace the flywheel so you get a little judder on pulling away once everything has warmed up. Also the biting point is getting quite high so a bleed of the clutch hydraulics probably wouldn't go amiss to sort that out!
The car has been lowered using a crappy set of lowering springs. I had always intended on putting a decent set of coilovers on as the ride on these springs is a little firm for my liking! I don't know what make they are and I don't know how much it's lowered by, but it's pretty low on the front and not quite so low on the back.
All four tyres have a reasonable amount of tread left on them and will last a good while longer. The wheels are kerbed and have some laquer peel but once scrubbed up don't look too bad.
The bodywork is in reasonable condition. Obviously there are a few age related scratches and very small dents around the car and unfortunately the rear arches are just starting to get some rust bubbling through (very common on E36s) The car has a black standard front bumper with fog lights as the M3 one that was fitted met a grizzly end when I got a bit too close to the pavement parking head on outside work! The rear bumper is an M3 one though.
The car has a full tan leather interior including the door cards. The drivers seat has a couple of holes in the side bolster but the rest of the seat and other seats are all ok. The car has a black dash and black carpets. At some point someone has removed the original headlining and fitted a tartan one! It was done really badly and looks kack! It needs a new headlining really! The car has electric front windows which both work and an electric sunroof which I have never tried so can't promise anything with that. The car has air conditioning however there's no belt fitted so I have no idea if that works either. Lastly the car has central locking which works perfectly on the drivers door, rear passengers door and boot lid. It works intermittently on the front passenger door and doesn't work at all on the drivers side rear door. I have two replacement central locking solenoids for those doors which I will include with the car.
I can't think of anything else to say about it at the moment. Feel free to ask any questions you might have. I'm confident this car will drive anywhere in the UK without any bother at all so if you would 100% buy it if only it was closer, don't fret! Jump on a bus, train or plane and you can actually drive it back! Amazing things, cars!
Cheers,
Sammo
