I called into tesco and bought this lot to make a start. Pledge to clean all the dashboard. 2 tins of febreeze. A neutradol odour destroyer. A can of foam carpet cleaner. I've cleaned all the plastic with the pledge, opened the neutradol tub and put it in the door pocket, and blasted the car with febreeze a few times. The foam carpet cleaner is the type where you spray it on and leave it and it drys itself quickly. It's getting there, the really strong smell has gone, but it's still there. I think next I need a cleaner which I can put onto the seats and carpet and scrub it till its gone. so you asked for advice read all the posts ignored them all and did your own thing........................ I asked for advice, someone said above to get an odour bomb, so I bought a simliar product to that, and picked up a few things at the shop as I said, to make a start. I am going to try onions and vinegar as suggested and get a fabric cleaner as suggested, but I haven't seen one in my supermarket Have you got any advice to offer? or are you here to troll my thread and offer nothing other than to have a go at me? Oh you did offer one bit of advice, "get a cat to p*ss in it" Everyone is helping and offering tips, there's always one like you. Try reading the rules that 99% of the members stick to. Give the fabrics and carpet a good steam cleaner (with a few drops of lemon juice in the tank for extra freshness)...

JPR, thats another thing I started yesterday. My lass has a steam cleaner, I got about half of the car done, and I am going back at it again today. I will try the lemon juice in the water tank, thats a good idea, it should make a nice smell as it steams.

I tried the route you've taken, it was better, but didn't really work in my Twingo that i think the previous owner had been using as a kennel! I was told that rubbing dried coffee grounds into the carpet etc would do the trick, but the smell was so bad that i decided to sell the car instead! Good luck!

Cheers piston popper. I have spent another hour cleaning the car today. I did all the carpets and seats with the steam cleaner with a touch of lemon in. I used a full roll of parcel tape to remove hairs and I also chopped up some onions as suggested earlier in the thread.
I am actually toying with the idea of buying another micra and swapping the interior over. There are a lot of very cheap micras about, I could easily get one for £100 and swap all the good bits then scrap it or break out the rest.

You could always pull the carpets out and jetwash them. That will work very well and should dry pretty quick on a warm day. You could even remove the seat covers from the seats and do the same with them. most car seats are surprisingly easy to do this on, so no need to get the seat foam soaked.

That's a good idea. Either jet wash it, or I could pick up a carpet from my local breakers, which will only be a few pound. The carpet in mine has a really bad stain like something, possibly a dog has been sick on it. I spent about 20 mins non stop with the steam cleaner just on the stain and it hardly touched it.
Funny you should mention the seat covers, I was looking at the seats today and the covers look very easy to take off, looks like some small rings which should unclip. I could either jet wash them or put them in the washing machine.

Today I stripped the cloth off both front seats, it was very fiddly but got it done and then put the covers in the washer. I have dried one and put it back on the seat and it smells nice.
I removed the carpet from the car and went to my local breakers, I took a very nice carpet out of another micra and the fella only wanted £10. So I just need to wash the rear covers, fit the carpet and put the car all back together and it should be all sorted.
I took the car out today with no interior, just the drivers seat fitted with its foam on and blanket over the top. Plus a handful of halved onions rolling around!

Try an anti-bacterial all purpose cleaner. Daisy from Tesco is up to the job. If it's really bad, mix it at 4:1 with water in a spray bottle. Apply it to the seats and work it in with a brush. Cover the seats with cling film so that it can penetrate into the foam. The smelly bacteria will be living deep down in the seats. Leave it over night and then uncover the next morning and wipe over with a lightly dampened cloth. If you can get hold of a wet vacuum then extract as much water from the seats as you can that way. As above, don't forget the headlining. Only use a damp cloth with the all purpose cleaner sprayed onto it. Headliners can sag if they get too wet.
Run an odor bomb through it and it'll smell great.

Over the weekend I have managed to fit the carpet I got from the breakers, this is 100 times better than my old one. The front seat covers went in the washer and only just fit inside, then I had to do a second wash with the rear covers. I did it very low at a 20 degree wash to stop anything shrinking. It was a very fiddly job to refit the covers, there were dozens of little rings that I opened up with pliers when I removed the covers, I had to refit the rings and nip them shut one by one with pliers again which took a couple of hours. I also got from the breakers, a parcel shelf and the boot carpets, plus some bits of plastic trim. Its all back together now and it smells so much better.
I had forgot to do the headlining, its grey, but its covered in tiny little orange marks, little circles about 3x3mm, I have rubbed a couple with my fingers and they came straight off. Thats the last thing to do, go back into the car and clean the headlining, as suggested above, I will do it very gently to avoid damaging it and making it drop down.

Probably a bit late now but spraying the inside with TFR then steaming it with a proper steam cleaner the industrial type. Finish by sucking as much as possible out with a vax or similar, expect the stuff coming out to be black sludge, you may to repeat till it comes out clean
