Overview
For sale we have an exceptional, 1989 Ford Escort RS Turbo Series 2, in Diamond White with an indicated 21,720 miles on the clock.
This vehicle offers a blast back to the late 80s turbo hot hatch, without the usual worries of a tired interior, worn mechanicals and rust!
The car has been off the road for at least the last twelve years so has gone through a thorough re-commissioning to allow the next owner to enjoy this car to its full potential.
The details of this car are as follows;
History
This Escort RST was built on 18th January 1989 and first registered on Valentine’s Day 1989. The car has had 4 owners – 3 registered. We purchased the car from the brother-in-law of a friend of Yesterday’s Cars, who is also in the motor trade. Therefore, the car was not registered in his own name.
Both he and the owner before him who he knew, treated the car pretty much as a museum piece –keeping it clean and running the engine but not driving it. As a consequence, the car has not been on the road for at least 12 years and we suspect longer, given the lack of any MOT or service history. Therefore, the mileage cannot be warranted.
When you see the car in the flesh you can see just how fresh it is – the paintwork, trim and interior all looking in-line with the indicated mileage, as is the solid feel in the way the car drives. It really is a fantastic looking example of the RS Turbo.
It is a matching numbers car and has gone through a thorough recommissioning. This has included all belts and fluids change and all systems/sensors checked.
The car now has an MOT until 2nd July 2016 with no advisories.
Body
The bodywork of this Escort RST is in exceptional condition, with no rust and very fresh looking paintwork. Panels are straight and the only blemish is a very small scuff on the offside front corner of the bumper which is only noticeable close-up.
The underside of the car is very clean too, with no rot to be seen as you would expect from such low use.
This Escort does have some period modifications to the exterior, such as de-locked doors (the original locks come with the vehicle) and facelift model front bumper and rear spoiler. These modifications sit well with the car and look period correct.
When the car was nearly new, it had an insurance damage claim marked against it (the car was not stolen.) We spent a number of hours inspecting the car before our purchase and there are no residual signs of accident damage or repair on the body or chassis and all of the panels are genuine Ford.
The car really needs to be seen in the flesh to appreciate how solid and straight it is, and to feel that nearly new feel of how items such as the doors close.
Mechanical/Running gear
The mechanicals of the car are very tight and smooth running, but with having sat for so many years we have performed a thorough re-commissioning of the car. All belts, fluids and filters have been replaced, along with distributor cap, rotor arm and spark plugs. All engine sensors and set-up have been checked and the engine runs smoothly. The battery has also been replaced.
The car was found to be lacking a little power in the top end, so with the cylinder head off, we found that the head gasket had blown across one water way – we believe purely down to how long the car has sat without use. Therefore, the cylinder head has been skimmed and a new gasket fitted along with new head bolts. All other gaskets were replaced at the same time as well as the water thermostat.
All replaced parts have been kept so that any potential purchaser can see how good the old parts were. However, we wanted everything to be refreshed for peace of mind.
The car runs on as new, original alloys and four as new Uniroyal tyres. Period modifications of the running gear include a K&N cone filter, lowered suspension springs and a straight through, Scorpion exhaust system. With these last two modifications, the car handles well without being too firm or crashy and the engine note has a nice burble to it, without being boomy.
The previous owner coated every nut and bolt under the car and in the engine bay with clear/white wax which has helped to preserve the condition of the car.
Interior
As you would expect, the interior of this Escort is in fantastic condition, without worn bolsters on the Recaro seats and all trim and switch gear both looks and feels like new. The car doesn’t appear to have been smoked in.
The car benefits from the original radio cassette player, electric windows and mirrors, the trip computer and manual sunroof. The sunroof drain tray can be seen in fresh condition without any rust and the winding mechanism works freely. The car has had the windscreen replaced at some point in the past with a non-heated one, but the heated windscreen switch, loom and connections are all still present. Therefore, this feature could be resurrected if the new owner chose to do so.
The interior trim is the Zolda facelift model specification – if this was fitted new by Ford (this isn’t a facelift model car) or by a previous owner with the other modifications we do not know. What we can say is that the interior is in excellent condition and nothing looks out of place. The parcel shelf is in excellent condition too with no speaker holes!
Once again, only seeing this car in the flesh will allow you to see just how fresh the interior is.
We have had fitted a Cat 1 alarm and immobiliser to the car for the new owner. This comes with two remote fobs and there are two keys with tags present also.
Summary
What this Escort lacks by way of a full, catalogued history, it more than makes up for with its exceptional, overall condition. Take this car on face value for what it is and you can’t fail to be impressed by the way it looks and drives. All it needs now is a new owner to look after it and use it.
Any inspection is welcome and please contact us for further information. Inspection on a ramp is possible by appointment.
