Hi there,thought I'd introduce myself and my car.I'm a Management member over on Celicaclub,but I have always had a big interest on older skool or classic cars,of many different marques (I cut my teeth years ago on MK2 Escorts of varying stages of modification in the late 80's/early 90s) so i thought id pop in and say hello rather than just peruse from the sidelines. I bought this 4th generation Celica in 2009, for the grand total of £190.I was looking for a project,something a little old skool,and id always liked this generation of Celica being a bit of a rally fan in the day,thought this is the FWD N/A version rather than the even rarer 4WD Turbo car.So i bought it! Its come a fair old way since then,like all older cars it had its rust issues so there are some new panels,paint,waxoyl madness and all sorts going on here,waaaay too much work done to list briefly! On the surface its still a 1980s Toyota,but underneath its got some late 90's stuff,and some 21st Century bits n bobs too. JDM Redtop 'BEAMS' VVTi engine from 1998 6th Gen J import Celica,running full JDM loom and ECU.Top end rebuilt while it was out,seals,HG,the lot. UK ST202 GT 5 speed 'box Blitz filter with twin feed CAI Whiteline engine brace Whiteline droplinks Whiteline uprated rear ARB with polybushes Whiteline camber bolts BC 'BR' series adjustable coilovers ST182 front calipers, BEAMS brake booster,HEL braided brake lines,MTEC drilled and grooved 277mm front discs ,Ferodo DS2500 pads..rears running 255mm Black Diamond setup with Pagid pads. Nakajima PIAA lightweight alloys powdercoated in Frozen White. Custom single box stainless exhaust system built and fitted by Powerspeed (Fast Road Conversions,Kent UK) Probably some smaller bits I've forgotten She's a really nice car to drive,still got the original clocks and interior apart from the steering wheel,so still feels nice and old skool,but is very tight and flat on the corners,plenty of power there considering what she is,running just under the 200bhp mark but should squeeze a bit more with some more exhaust work,the BEAMS engine comes alive at around 4200RPM and then pulls hard round to the set cutout at 7500RPM. So shes light enough and quick enough to be a really nicely balanced package,and on a private road at an appropriate time will put the frighteners up a lot of more modern 'quick' cars,she's not the very fastest out there but if you do take us on you'll be working verrry hard,trust me . Anyway,enough waffle,i hope you like her ,and with a bit of luck the pics will post up ok. Cheers for now SHERV I've just sourced an S54 gearbox from a JDM car with LSD,also on its way is a brand new Fidanza lightened flywheel,and a bit later ill get a slightly meatier clutch,as the OEM one in it is okayish but i really feel its a little soft.All this is being collected for later on when itll all go in as one job lot at my buddy Bek's 'laboratory'.Itll give improved response and stop the inner wheel lighting up on enthusiastic acceleration/cornering. He did all the engine swap planning /electrics in the first place.He knows his Celicas inside out...He's a bit of a machine actually.Been there with him with us both working on the cars til some stupid times of the morning,sometimes these things have to be done though....

Lovely work and welcome to the forum. Restomod/sleeper cars are a fave of mine. I hope my own little toyota ends up half as good as your project.

Thanks for all the replies and kind comments.She will be in for the transmission upgrade in the next few weeks,looking forward to that.Definitely not easy keeping old Toyotas going body-wise anyway,but she's doing well and love driving her.And something a bit rare on the roads nowadays!

I love this generation Celica, my headteacher at primary school used to have one and I remember thinking it was such a cool looking shape I came fairly close to buying one last year, yours must be a right laugh with the BEAMS engine in it Looks great! Ha yeah my Dads mate had one brand new,I was about 16 and thought it was the coolest car,especially with the pop up headlights.They were quite well specced for the time if you think about it.Alloy wheels,disc brakes all round,option of ABS, 2.0 twincam fuel injected engine with 147hp ,electric tilt and slide metal sunroof,electric windows,electric mirrors,A/C,digital clock and centre console with armrest and twin cup holders etc. When i think of my old '87 Sierra GL I got a fag lighter,and a rev counter,and the SOHC 1.8 engine.LOL. Mind you the Celica was around 16-17 grand back then. If you can find a good one then they are a great car,its the bodywork you have to watch.Bottoms of front wings,rear arches and rear sill sections and rusty sunroof panels are the classic 4th gen areas to look for,as well as the cubby in the boot where the toolkit lives.Engine wise they are excellent,PAS hoses prone to leak after so many years,and leaky cam cover gaskets.The REV1 3SGE unit is a hardy beast though,100,000 miles and they're about run in . A whole load of fun with the BEAMS unit in though for sure!

Millers Nanotech CRX 75W-90 oil for the LSD 'box arrived today courtesy of Opie oils.Also wasnt going to reuse the flywheel bolts once the old 'wheel is off,so when the Fidanza goes on I've splurged on a set of ARP bolts for the fly.Do it properly,do it once as they say.Exedy 3 piece clutch kit is on its way to the 'Lab',where Bek the mad scientist will have the car,although ill be there to do my bit as well. Think I'm pretty much there bits wise for the transmission upgrade,I've got a set of driveshafts already made up thanks to the guys at TCB parts down in Cornwall:pre assembled low miles Gen6 Celica inners,Gen4 shafts and new outers with new boots both ends.Remember that the engine and current gearbox are from the Gen6 series Celica (this car being a Gen4),the Beams engine/loom/ECU are from the JDM 6th Gen car,the gearbox was from a UK gen6(same fitment) open diff.We utilised the original gen4 driveshafts on the car when the Beams was fitted at first,Gen6 shafts on their own were a touch too long so it was a bit of an experiment to see how the 1980s spec items would hold up;figured that its not like we're suddenly shoving 300 bhp through them ,its just shy of 200,an increase of around 50hp ,and anyway thats flywheel figures so was fairly sure theyd be ok,and they have been;but as the new JDM LSD box was going in,we thought it would be good if we replaced the shafts with a slightly more custom setup,my mate Bek who does the conversion work on the Celicas had a word with the guys at TCB and hey presto we should have the new shafts just plug n play ready to go when we do the trans conversion.Oh it all sounds so easy doesnt it ha ha. Should be going in 2nd week of March,the advantage of LSD over open diff is a no brainer,I'm interested to see how the light flywheel works out.Its possible it could be a little lumpier at idle,its not a daily so i can live with that,but mainly to see if it actually makes any real response difference being half the weight of the OE one.This is a street car,not a racecar,so I've put a lot of thought into how to modify the original car while trying to keep it not only looking modded-80s style,(i could quite easily put a newer interior in for example,but i don't want to,itll look too 'new'),but also to get some good performance without making it too hardcore to drive,so i didnt just go for coilovers with a silly hard spring rate for an example,got 6 front 4 rear,so if i have a drive from Kent to Northants or wherever for a car show,i can actually get there without the car p*****g me off all the way there;but i can still wind the rebound down quickly when i find a B road and be confident the car will go,handle and stop like it should do without it being unpredictable and frankly,unsafe.I've kept right on that line well so far,it can feel quite raw when i want it to be but still reasonably civilised too.Ok,the A/C has gone as well as some other weight saving bits but it still has the electric windows,sunroof,mirrors and all that stuff as it was from the factory so I can have my fun without tooooo much compromise Although it is bloody loud with that single box system on.

so is there much parts commonality with a 182? or does it all look a bit like but not quite the same
might be worth sliding an arp flywheel bolt into the fidanza, then resting your clutch drive plate in its natural position. i got caught out because the heads on the ARP are much taller (than standard flywheel bolts) and actually touched the clutch springs !

Cheers Darren,thats a good point ill try that out.Some of the 182 is interchangeable,the trouble with Toyota is that they changed some things on the cars depending on the year; ie you have prefacelift and facelift versions of the st16-cars,st18-cars and st20- Celicas.My car is a 1987 st162, and is a prefacelift.The 88 onwards cars (bear with me on this) are facelift;slightly different grille and wheels,indicators,different shaped engine sensors (! wtf Toyota),and so on. I had to buy coilovers for the ST182 as i couldnt get the ones i wanted for my car;the fronts fit spot on,no problem,BUT the rears we modified as the bottom bolt hole on the strut is a few mm out.HOWEVER if my car was a facelift st162,they would have bolted on!Toyota even changed the layout ever so slightly,theres no sensible engineering explanation for this,just that it means owners back then couldnt swap some bits over,they were forced to buy the specific parts for the year.This now means it can be a minefield for some parts. So yeah you can swap some parts over but you have to do your homework on which year.The front brakes on my car are from a 182 and they bolt straight on,bar removing the rear dust cover on the hub.Again though,I chose the FACELIFT st182 ones though,as Toyota used a larger caliper with bigger piston,and 277mm discs compared to the earlier 255mm discs on the earlier st182 cars. The Carina also shared some parts too,just to throw that into the mix before i bore the curse word out of you.but yeah mechanically you can do a few little mix n match,no body panels though.Wheels are all 5x100 PCD on the 80s cars onwards, so you can swap them about pretty easily.Plenty of gen4s with the later gen7 wheels on,they actually sit better on the old cars than they did on the gen7,in my opinion.Only thing to watch for is the st205 GT4,it has bloody great calipers so only a certain offset will fit one of those,you can put the GT4 whells on a standard car though just not the other way round. I should go out more . speaking of which as youre in Kent theres a large car meet in Canterbury on saturday,if you are in the area let me know and ill give you more details on meet/convoy etc.
