Can anyone advise what would normally happen to cars traded in to a garage, for example where they offer £1000 min p/x for a car and its a make or model they don’t sell, or too old for their forecourt? Would they just normally be sent to an action? If I went to a dealers and said I’m looking for an XXXXX have you had one traded in, would they bear me in mind and resell it on themselves to clear it?

Hi, yes anything they don't want on their front would go to auction or to known traders they have for the best price, anything not worth much that the traders don't want will either be scrapped, sold to some one lower down the chain to part out or banger raced. You could ask but they wouldn't want you treading on their traders toes by you cherry picking a good car as a one-off. So it depends what you're after as to where it fits in the scheme of things. What they offer on P/ex has very often nothing to do with the value of it, anything over that is being paid by the purchaser of the new car in its price/profit.

From my experience they have traders who they will ring and sell the car over the phone to, extremely hard to get into as they usually only deal with specific traders and don't want the hassle of selling to members of the public or people they don't know. They just want the car gone asap with minimum of hassle.

When I last asked around no big dealer would sell any PX, that wasn't good enough for their forecourt, to me. You might get a better response from a small dealer rather than a main agent type setup.

The jag I run at the moment was bought from a small trader. He used to work at Jaguar and since setting up on his own, buys some of their trade ins. He literally put it straight up for sale, it hadn't even been cleaned.

Befriend the sales manager at a main dealer. Worked well for me in days gone by.

I'm betting at most places the trade ins are taken into account in the sale , so are effectively free , hence going to auction quickly or being taken by traders under some sort of contract . Its simply not worth there time faffing about with a £500 cars for example , when that time could be spent selling a new[er] car .

Strange, I have a friend who is not far from you (Leek) and he regularly buys clearance cars from dealers in the Stoke and Macclesfield areas.

When I traded in my 107K miles Fiat Panda for £500 at a main dealer I was told it was going straight to auction.

Most of the Big auction houses (BCA, Mannheim, etc)have searchable websites if you register. The Trade no reserve sales always have oddities.
Was very tempted by a T plate 2.0 GTV in a no reserve the other day, but knew i'd be strung up if i brought another tat box home... It sold with 9months MOT for £200...

That 200 would be closer to 300 once you had added on the indemnity buyers premium etc.

AFAIK no matter what basis a dealer sells a car (new, used, "spare or repair" etc) to the public then they are obliged to conform to the same sales terms. They can't have a get out clause on receipt by writing "sold as seen" ! So a £500 PX if sold to public could cost dealer a fortune in rectifying any faults that might occur hence they either send to auction or smaller dealers.

For a very clean 80k, full history, full leather, summer toy that will probably throw its dummy out of the pram within a couple of miles i thought it was worth a punt if "I only had the space/ room/understanding missus/ etc, etc"...
