Part 2:
Found a reaaaally cheap 1995 Volvo 960 Manual with a terribly slow 2.5 inline 6. It was slow and thirsty.
It wasn't even remotely close to perfect. Front end was crashed, still straight though, front bumper... let just not talk about it...rear end.. I'm not sure, trunk doesn't line up 100% and there is a tiny bit of rust on the pass. side rear fender. Goes straight, quiet as hell, no squeks and rattles (apart from the front end bushings ) so I reckon the body was straight.
The old lump on its way out of the bay..
This one was interesting:
both hydro mounts were hacked up. No idea what happened or why, but definitely received some angle grinder treatment. Basically the engine could bounce around in the bay. Only the driveshaft some water piping and its own weight held it on place.
Spare engine serving as a dummy is going in. At this point I still had the 850...
In the 850 the ignition is rotor based, but if You mount the engine longitudinal the cap won't fit because of the firewall.
So I made my own:
Ugly, isn't it?
Decided against using it, ditched the OEM Motronic 4.3 ECU and bought a VEMS instead.
Made new intake side engine mount because I want to retain the A/C unit.
OEM power steering pump didn't fit because of the intake manifold, so I sourced an electric unit from a Astra. Got to modify the bracket a bit, but it worked fine.
Yay, wiring. Actually it is the easiest and most fun part for me. I like wiring..
A bit more organized, only the right box is what I need:
Last time together:
Final engine is in:
Fun fact: I'm a fat curse word but I cut stand between the engine and the slam panel and work on the engine. Got to love big engine bays.
Some IC piping
After a bit more fiddling, it was done! It was a huge pain to get to this point, but I had a 960 volvo with a glorious T5 engine running on VEMS. I was quite proud of myself.
Artsy engine bay shot.. I had to hide the temporary wiring and the general mess somehow...
Notice how much higher the front sits with the T5
Cut the front springs (because cheap) and since the rear is a leaf spring setup i just climbed in to the trunk and asked a buddy to take a picture for me...
Looks half decent.. wheels were borrowed only
Made a ghetto side pipe:
Than a bit quieter exhaust
It is slow because it running about 0.3bar of boost, had some wastegate issues.
For those who don't know, Volvo had two types of independent rear end.
From 89(?) to 1994(or 3) the 760/80 and 960 used a spring and shock based independent rear end (MK1), and they switched to the "modern" leaf spring and shock combo (MK2) in 1995. What a great idea...
I planned to upgrade the suspension, but the leafsping setup was hopeless. So I found a MK1 960 in a friends backyard...
Look, no leafs!
Put it into storage...
In the meantime welded the diff.. sadly never found its way to the car...
Replaced the stock fuel pump with an AEM unit. It was a b*tch to get out... no folding seats...
Never bonded with the car really. Always had cold start problems, and didn't feel like it is my car. So I took it apart.
And sold the shell to a friend who is swapping in a T6 engine. That is a 3 liter inline 6 twin turbo engine.
Part 3 reveals the next installment of the trusty T5 engine which is its 4th home
