OK I just bought a 1974 Midget of an old boy in Milton Keynes it has been of the road since 1994 but he recently had it recommissioned and put 12 months MOT on it. Problem is he only has the V5 from when he bought it in 1988 (the single page paper jobie)
My question is how do I go about applying for a new V5C in my name or will the dvla be funny with it since its been of the road since 94?
Any help appreciated.

Give them a ring, I had one with the old V5 and they said it's no problem. It all depends who you get on the phone, but usually they're pretty helpful.

I'm sure someone else will know better than me, but I'd say just send it off as instructed on the V5 you've got...unless you want to keep the old one of course. I'm pretty sure car ownership doesn't have a sell-by date, especially when the relevant documents are still to hand.
Have you run the reg through the DVLA to see if it's on the system?

Just done it, showing untaxed and MOT'D so at least it's on there. I would like to keep the old V5 if I can just because it's cool!

Thanks, I'll give them a bell tomorrow I didn't know about the old V5 until I got there. Bit gutted really as I can't drive it until the new one comes through now.

You can just apply for a new V5, it'll cost you £25 but you can hold onto the old style one.

Have you tried taxing it on line? Might work under the new system!

I've had a car off the road since 2002 and that was on the old style V5 - not the old old one but the two part blue one.
Thought they might get a bit funny with me when I applied to change it (I wanted it updated and a change of address) but there was no issue. I sent it off following the instructions and got a new one back no problem.

I had a very similar thing with my Granada. It had the old V5 document. Nothing else. I sent them a polite covering letter asking if they could return it for my history folder. To my amazement they returned it to me with a compliments letter and the new V5. They had stamped 'Void' across it but I was happy to have it back.
I was so impressed with DVLA. I did however colour scan it first before sending it, just in case.

Ahh no, this is what I meant...
"There is no fee if you haven’t received the V5C registration certificate for your new vehicle but still have your green V5C/2 section. You’ll need to send this in with the completed V62 form."
but you obv won't have the green slip!

Quick update, rang the dvla and they said to send the old v5 in with my details updated is fine but to make sure send a v62 and a covering letter with it.
I'll be sending it tomorrow and will report back the outcome.
Thanks for all the advice.
