For sale I have my Volvo 740 GL auto. The overall condition is good for its age and mileage (showing 211k miles) and the interior is in very good condition! It has the 7 seat option with pull down dog guard, also heated seats and mirrors. I used this through the winter as a daily until a couple of months ago, when unfortunately it developed a starting issue, I tried replacing the fuel pump relay (common issue) but this hasn't helped. When i bridge the fuelpump relay the pump primes. But this is as far as i have gotten with investigating the problem, as i just don't have the time or space for it anymore so it is for sale. I'm sure it is a simple fix, crank sensor possibly. The only other fault with the car is the kick down cable sticks (another common issue) So i have disconnected it and just shifted manually. New cables arent expensive. The car has MOT until October, so i would rather see it back on the road as it is in too nice condition to go to waste. Some pictures to show the general condition. Asking price £375ono I'm location in March, Cambridgeshire Call or txt 0784one 389633 Thanks Matt

That looks very nice considering the mileage. Does it drive at the moment ?

I'm also curious as to whether this is running. Do you have any more information about the starting problem as I could be interested but concerned it could be a more major fault.

No the car does not start, as i have stated.
For some reason the fuel pumps (there are 2) are not working when they should. There is a dual stage relay thats a common course of this, but a replacement hasnt helped. Apparently the crank sensor operates the second stage of the fuelpump relay, so that would be the next step i guess. The engine turns over fine just isnt getting fuel.

Sorry wasn't sure as it can sometimes be an intermittant fault.
My 940 has another relay in the engine compartment known as the radio suppression relay in Volvo speak and they stop the engine starting. I don't know if your car is too early/has the right injection system to have one though. sometimes a faulty crank sensor will show up as a non moving rev counter whilst cranking.
Could it be something simple like the ignition switch itself ?

This is a K-Jet injection system so it won't have a radio suppression relay. The crank sensor is actually a hall sensor inside the distributor and is one of the very few things that can stop one of these old tanks. It definitely sounds like that's the problem here. I would just throw another dizzy on it.
Great old bus for that money

I found that sensor you mention on the dizzy when investigating, can that just be replaced or would it need a whole dizzy? Matt

Hi You can strip down the dizzy and change the sensor but I've heard it can be awkward, particularly riveting the new sensor in place. You can buy a replacement sensor on ebay for about £20 iirc. Here's a link to a write up from someone on the Volvo forum www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=58171HTH

Well I've just had 5mins and taken the dizzy off and the wires for the sensor had broken, so looks like I've found the problem.
Think I'll just get a replacement dizzy depending on price.
Thanks alot for you help!
I will keep this thread updated with the cars status, it will still be for sale if I get it running. But will ofcourse be asking more for it.

UPDATE!
Hallsender replaced and car now starts and runs fine! So the only problem with the car now is the kickdown cable, but the car is perfectly driveable shifting manually.
The car is still for sale and I would like £500 for it.
Any questions or to arrange viewing please get in contact!
Thanks Matt
