My unreliable-starter coupe is probably worth more worth more dead than alive so I have a 'breaking' thread too but I'm lazy and sentimental so I'd love to see this going to someone to fix it or swap a less temperamental engine into but I'm a realist so know these are just not as well loved as the W123s yet and the 24v M103/M104 curse word engine is pretty unpopular so this will end up stripped to the bones and the shell turned into chinese washing machines. C'est la vie... The price not fixed, it's just me ambitiously trying to get something back on the cost of the gearbox rebuild. PM me, talk to me, convince me you're going to restore life into a car I loved having and we can do a deal... The highlights are: Gearbox professionally rebuilt last year (£900), I have the invoice Fully functioning electric black leather ortho front seats woth no rips or tears (photos below) I have two new front wings in the correct colour that could go with the car if the deal is right Very retro sound system with CD changer squeezed into the glovebox OEM white rear lenses, the others are cheapos Bad bits: No MOT, it expired in November. It had ran for a fortnight after letting me down in an embarrasing way so I booked the test and the effing thing wouldn't start. I rebooked the test three times, and the effing thing let me down each day. It's an unreliable starter despite dizzy, coil, HT leads, various relays and other odds and ends having been checked and replaced. Seems to be characteristic of this engine based on thread here and on Benz forums. When it starts, the engine runs well and pulls like a train. Exhaust needs attention, it hangs funny and blows but I have a spare back section that can go with the car. Photos below, do let me know if you want more detailed shots of anything in particular.

This looks superb. I would love to get this running reliably again.
The orthopedic seats look great - whats the red switch in centre console? Any rust on the old girl?

The red switch is just a dummy switch, we have one as an MP3 amp switcher in the saloon and my little boy wanted one in this car while it was my daily. There was a blemish on the trim so I fitted the switch. It needed a hole drilled, unfortunately Made sense at the time, I did it after I'd just dropped nine hundred quid on a gearbox rebuild so I expected to have this car for the long haul. There is corrosion, worst of which is the front wings. The rear arches have body-coloured arch covers on them so they are manky underneath but it's hidden. A few people have asked so I'll get more photos up tomorrow eve.

Must resist... too many cars... must resist...
That said, what are the non-starting symptoms? Does it have spark and fuel? Have you checked the over-voltage relay?
Also might help to sell the car if you put up a list of all the options. There are Mercedes VIN decoders floating around the internet that will list all the options your car came with.

That said, what are the non-starting symptoms? Does it have spark and fuel? Have you checked the over-voltage relay? It has both spark and fuel. Spark proven using one of the gadgets go in line with the plug and HT lead that light up. Fuel proven by pulling the plug to smell it. The OVP it has at the moment works in two other W124s and the one from this car is still in my daily driver saloon. I'm assuming that ruled this out but others may know better. The car had two MB dizzy caps in the boot when I got it, they don't improve the problem. I used emery cloth on the tip of the rotor and the contacts, no improvement. I swapped the HT leads onto my daily driver saloon and found no difference but bought a new set of HT leads (Magnecore)anyway and tried that but found they made no difference so they're now on my daily driver saloon It had a day a Bosch specialist while it was away having the 'box rebuilt in Wolverhampton and they fitted a button to simulate the cold start because they found that to be unreliable but found no other faults. The car, typically, behaved perfectly when they had it though it refused to start a couple of times when it was with the gearbox guys. It's not, and never has been, a "first time every time" type fault so any one of these things I've already checked could be the root cause in some way. The reason I've given up on it is that I just have no confidence in it now, I feel like I'll never know if the issue is fixed, I'll just be waiting on it breaking down again. Also might help to sell the car if you put up a list of all the options. There are Mercedes VIN decoders floating around the internet that will list all the options your car came with. That's a really good idea, cheers. I'll grab the VIN later and post the decoder results.

If you have another car with the same engine that runs I'd try swapping over the following three bits
1. Fuel Pump Relay - I believe some of the connections to the circuit board break over time - can provide an intermittent problem. Easily sorted by soldering.
2. EZL Box - known weak spot on the M104.980. I don't know if these fail ittermittently though but no harm in checking
3. Cam Sensor - I had this fail on mine - wouldn't start.

Does it have the self levelling rear suspension? No, not fitted. Is that good or bad?

Does it have the self levelling rear suspension? No, not fitted. Is that good or bad? Given the age of the car, I'd say probably a good thing (one thing less to go wrong!).
Although it was a desirable option to have, if all working correctly.
Lovely cars these, and the W124 coupe is another one of those scratches that I am wanting to itch!
GLWTS.
