For Sale (or swap for a Mustang!) – 1964 Chevy C-10 Short Bed, Step Side, Pick Up Truck in truly remarkable condition, 51 years old, only 84k miles and I’m only the 4th owner. It’s a 230ci straight 6 with ‘three on the tree’ manual transmission £10,995 If you’re still reading then I guess you’re interested so my advice is go make yourself a cup of tea, and settle in for a long read as there is lots to tell you about this truck……… This pick up was imported to the UK in August 2014, having spent almost all it’s life in the dry state of Texas where it was much loved and well cared for by the first three owners between 1964 and 2014. I bought it from the guy who imported it in September 2014, which is when it was MOT’d and UK registered. The story goes that it was a Texas truck from new until 2008, and then went to Iowa, where it was hardly used and spent most of it’s time in the garage. It’s obvious that this truck has had lots of work done during the full, body off frame restoration the previous owners did before it left the USA. It certainly doesn’t look like a 50 year old truck underneath!

When I bought my truck it had only been in the UK for a few weeks and the dealer didn’t know anything about the history of the truck. There was very little paperwork with it except a copy of the last US title. I wrote to the name on the title document and asked if they could tell me anything about it and included a picture of how the truck looks now. I got an e-mail back and they were really surprised it had ended up in the UK as they sold it through an auction in Iowa in January 2014. They were able to tell me it was originally a farm truck from Dallas and she still had the original salesman’s business card with the price of the truck written on the back in the glovebox when they bought it. It was sold new for $1632.89 including state tax and registration fee and an optional heavy duty rear bumper by Tom Wicker at the Earl Hayes Chevrolet Dealership in Dallas and it was white originally. The truck was sold to Miss Jessie C Ballard who also lived in Dallas and she used it for many years to tow her horse-box. Jessie then sold the truck to the last owners in the 1990’s. They lived in McKinney, Texas. The last owners did a total body off restoration over several years and have sent me many of the bills etc for the new parts fitted. They had the frame stripped and powder-coated, all new steering, suspension and brakes, new interior, the transmission and engine were stripped and re-built and the engine was fitted with a new head. After that they hardly used the truck and in 2008 moved to Iowa, taking the truck with them and just putting it into a garage where it stayed until January 2014 when they decided to move house and to sell the truck. They were thrilled that their old truck has a new lease of life over here. This picture is how it looked after they restored it. As the truck had spent almost all of it's life in Texas it is totally solid and the chassis is like new. This is how it looked underneath when I got it...... The British weather is never kind to old cars so I had a top quality undersealing job done on the pick-up by Rustmaster in Hatfield. Their work is guaranteed and they did an excellent job, first steam cleaning everything then applying the rustproofing and wax injecting any cavities.

I’ve also bought a tailor made cover for the truck to protect it from the British Winters.... There are a load of other parts and spares which I’ll include (at the right price) like the original sales brochure, a new and never fitted under bed spare wheel carrier, an original genuine spare grill and headlight bezels, spare wheels / tyres, original Chevy workshop manuals / wiring diagrams and the glovebox owners instruction manual. I also have a Haynes manual for the truck. I recently fitted a Mooneyes steering wheel. The interior is in fabulous condition. There is a new Sony multi media player (iPod compatible or plays from a USB or SD card) with 6” x 9” speakers under the seats, and a Sun tacho is fitted. I also fitted a reversing light as where I park is right up against a fence which is low and hard to see.

The truck never had a windscreen washer system (guess it doesn’t rain much in Texas!), but they are an MOT requirement in the UK so I fitted this as well……….. And a cut off switch which is easier than disconnecting and reconnecting the battery whenever you want to work on the truck, or as an added security feature. The Reversing light and washer pump needed switches so I added these under the dash and also a 12v USB socket for phones or Sat Nav…………… The truck currently has chrome ‘Rally’ wheels. The fronts are 15” x 8” with 235/70 x 15 BF Goodrich whitewall tyres. On the back the wheels are 10” wide and have 275/60 x 15 BF Goodrich whitewall tyres.

If you wanted a more original look, I also have a set of 4 original 16" Chevy wheels and hubcaps with just the right amount of Patina to match my truck. There are no tyres on these as the original old cross-plys were well passed their best and have been removed Well done if you’ve read this far and I know I’m biased, but this really is a great truck, it starts first time, every time and runs really well and doesn’t leak or burn oil. The mileage is 84,200 ish miles and I have no reason to think this isn’t totally genuine. The truck has only been to one small local show so isn’t well known but those who have seen it have been really impressed. The photos don’t do it justice. I’m not absolutely convinced that I want to sell it and have a nasty feeling that I might regret this decision, but I’ve seen a Mustang I would really like to buy and sadly can’t have both. £10,995 Available for viewing in Woking, any inspection welcome and I have a mate who runs a classic car transport business if you need it delivered anywhere in the UK or mainland Europe so can get you a reasonable quote for that if you need it. (Obviously it needs to be paid for before I’ll ship it anywhere!)
