I hate you guys... With a forum tittle "retro" I pretty much figured where that would all land. I will post the third option when I get it modeled in place. Its the earlier Miata dash, but I think I can make it look retro easier than I can build a steel dash from scratch. Always pleased to be of assistance. 😂

There was a guy on BSC forum putting an MX5 engine, box and diff in a mk1 Cortina. He cut the binnacle up and put it into the 6 standard cortina instruments so he could run the standard loom. They looked pretty good.

Personally, I really think the work you’ve done so far needs to be complemented with the dash layout from the Volvo. Yes, I know it’s way more work, and yes, I know that you’ll end up using very little of the original switchgear etc. but it’s going to be the icing on the cake. For me, glenanderson nailed it and in the right words too! The standard of work you've put into this just really only warrants one way forward here: the volvo dash. But in all fairness it depends a little on what your goals are/were. If you wanted to have the volvo look and feel on miata underpinnings than I'd still say go volvo dash. If the goal was to achieve the volvo look but less the feel, than you could make a case for the miata dash. Personally I'm in two camps here. The volvo dash is what belongs in this car, period. But I have seen modern dashes in oldtimers that look absolutely in place. I guess though, much depends on the dash shape. The 96 dash for me is too modern for the p1800es shapes. Tough decision...

Seeing this I still think it's worth the extra effort to go original volvo dash... I just don't see this pretty bland dash as complimenting on the rest of the build and the overall shape of the Volvo.
Is this final or are you still probing for which way you want to go?

This is going to be it. Some color changes and wood trim to give it a more retro look, but the decision has been made. I actually cut up one of the Vovlo dashes that I have, and by "cut up" I mean choped everything up until it fit and filled the gaps with tape and cardboard; was not a single piece of tin that could be used as-is and it did not look lo good to my eye because I had messed with the proportions too much. It also meant that I would have to figure out all new ducting for the HVAC system.

It also meant that I would have to figure out all new ducting for the HVAC system. I fully understand the reasoning... Although you've never been the type to go for the easy way as shown by you even attempting this project. I'm sure it will in the end look fine. It's your car and it's very easy to comment from this side of the keyboard not having to do the actual work! I'm pretty sure you'll have given it serious thought and sometimes you just have to decide... And you did. And as long as you are happy with that decision that is all that matters. Truthfully I'd have liked a little bit more of a classic feel to the dash. But it must be said, this seems to slot in rather well and making (room for) all new ducting can be quite challenging. I gave up on trying to fit aircon on my Granada for similar reasons. Just too much work and also (very improtant) no way back once started...

Without major mods the mx5 dash could easily be transformed into something with more than a passing resemblance to a 60s ferrari gto, would certainly suit this.

( only in a Volvo rather than a Miata as pictured) The tan/beige/orange is going away and we are going to land on a black interior with the MOSS wood-grain kit. The Volvo door-cards are in good enough shape that I could dye the vinyl and re-use them. But it might be fun to make new ones that make use of the MOSS wood accent in the door-card. Apologies for looking like I am bailing out on the challenge, but the firewall and dash were always going to be the critical thing to get right, and I would be remiss to not take advantage of the engineering that went into the Miata HVAC and ergonomics. Maybe I should re-purpose the spare button on the center console from headlight actuator to start button. That would confuse some people!

If you're referring to me, I'm not thinking you're wimping out or anything like that. You've shown to be up for a serious challenge and have now chosen a certain path for this part of the build. You do not have to appologize for that...
The wood seems to help a little, and I'm sure once done in the car it will look very nice. I think for the 60's ferrari style mentioned, a wood rimmed alloy steering wheel would be mandatory though.

The car is running on a depowered Miata rack. We will have to see if the effort is manageable. If not, I will be looking into an under dash electric solution.

A wood rimmed Nardi wheel, as fitted to the V-spec Eunos Roadsters would suit that very well.

Love the look of wooden steering wheels, but not so much the tactile feel.

An old leather motolita would look ace in there, i think the dash looks fine with or without the wood centre. I'm thinking mabie some body colour somewhere on the dash might look good?

If you have ever seen a wood rim wheel from an accident you would NEVER want to fit one!!
As your body hits them they splinter into lovely daggers!
Dash IMO looks ok, but the flat centre console looks a bit hideous - not sure if you can make that look a bit more shapely or not?

I assume that if the steering wheel is flat, it would fold over the spokes, especially if there are holes in the spokes. If the steering wheel is dished, the chance it splitters would be bigger as its more difficult to fold. Peter

Dash IMO looks ok, but the flat centre console looks a bit hideous - not sure if you can make that look a bit more shapely or not? I entirely agree with this. I think the dash and gauge pod is actually quite suited to the Volvo, especially if you could trim in something suitably classy. A retro wheel like you posted will also help the disguise. If you can lose the plastic centre console and possibly replace with something more classic, I think you've won the battle. This is a mk1 Audi TT which has nice looking braces from the dash to the console: Or you could even go closer to the more floating dash of the P1800
