Mechanically sound – Bodywork needs TLC.
The Story:
I heard about this car for sale locally through a mechanic friend of mine. It was less than a mile from my house, and I’m used to travelling hours to pick up a car, so it was rude to go and see it!
Previous owner had the car since January 2000 (as confirmed on Logbook), and was pampered during his ownership. Unfortunately, he had a stroke in 2010 and was unable to drive the car. It was sat idle on his drive way for over 4 years, in the hope he would be able to drive again. Sadly, he can no longer drive, so decided to let go.
Prior to it being parked up, it had the following:
• Complete New Exhaust System
• New Brake Discs & Pads All Round
• New Suspension Bushes
• 4 x New Kuhmo Ecsta Tyres
It has a folder of receipts for work he has had done. BMW Service Booklet has 14 Service Stamps. 3 Keys are present. It was regularly serviced in his ownership. Anything that needed doing - was done.
I am a sucker for an old 7 Series, so decided to buy the car as it was. So, here was this E32 looking rather sorry for itself. After a wash, it looked way better but was evident that lacquer had lifted on almost every panel of the car.
Next day, got it booked in for an MOT. It failed – just on two wiper blades! This shows how well the car was looked after and the work done prior to being parked up really showed. So, two new wiper blades later it had a full 12 Month MOT! It is all solid underneath.
I have fitted a set of new number plates as the old ones were fairly tired (I’m quite anal like that and believe that a new set of plates can really uplift a car’s appearance). Although the tyres have excellent tread, they do have some hairline cracks where the car was standing. They still hold air perfectly fine and were not mentioned on the MOT as an advisory.
Apart from that, I have done nothing with the car. My plan was to keep it and get the body resprayed over the summer and fit a set of Genuine Alpina alloys, but I have way too many other cars and my 8 Series keeps draining my funds, so I need to sell this and let someone else enjoy an E32.
The Car:
It’s all road legal now with the MOT. Drives really nice. The M30 has the legendary howl and pulls like a train in every gear.
‘M30 Big Block’ 3.5 Litre, Straight Six, 12 Valve, 218 bhp, 140+ mph
132k Miles, which is nothing for an M30 Big Block.
Gearbox is good, and the gear changes are slick and effortless. I'd dare say it feels like a better unit than Mercedes of the same era.
Brakes and suspension seem good, with no knocks or bangs. There is a wheel judder at around 45-55mph, and under heavy braking. Usual M30 oil leak (seems to be around the sump gasket area).
Smooth and quiet ride, just how an E32 should be. Would benefit from a full service and a good long run, to help clear out any cob webs from when it was standing. Emissions test passed fine on the MOT.
High specification includes: Switchable ZF Sports Automatic Gearbox, Full Tan Leather, Electric Front Seats, Memory Driver’s Seat, Dual Zone Climate Control, Air Con, Leather-Stitched Steering, 15” BBS Cross Spoke Alloys, Electric Adjustable Steering Column, Electric Windows x 4, Walnut Burr Trim, Illuminated Vanity Mirrors, Ambience Lighting, Trip Computer, Front Fog Lamps, BMW Spare Wheel, BMW Tool Kit
The bodywork is what lets this down, hence the low price: every panel has lacquer peel. Ideally, needs a full respray.
On the plus side, there is no major rust or rot and is a solid example throughout. This gives you a good base for the respray. The wheels are in excellent condition.
Interior is in good condition, with no rips or tears. The driver’s seat has the usual wear, but nothing to shout home about. The leather in this is buffalo hide, which has a better quality feel to it compared to the standard leather trim. It feels firmer, and is more robust in terms of wear and tear. The interior would benefit from a deep clean, but perfectly useable as is.
Everything works as it should – a testament to the 1980s BMW build quality (unlike the tosh they produce nowadays, where the plastics begin to wear out after 6 months!).
There are no warning lights on the dash, and all lights disappear as soon as the car is started.
Comes with: 5 Keys!, Previous MOT Certificates, Previous Tax Discs, Various Bill & Receipts, BMW Folder & User Manuals, BMW Service Booklet
Not a brand new car, but still a decent example for this money and mileage. Please be realistic with you expectations - It's a 26 year old motor with (below) average miles, it isn’t going to be mint unless you are paying over £6k for it.
I know I have used the term ‘rare’ a few times in the advert, but it really is a rare car. I mean, when is the last time you saw one on the road, let alone for sale?! Not many left now, so grab one while you still can.
Sold as seen. No warranty is given and / or implied. The car has been described honestly and to the best of my ability. Any inspection / viewing is welcome and highly encouraged, as everyone’s opinion of an old car will differ.
The car is located in Bracknell, Berkshire, RG12 post code. Please contact me on 07984 395400 for any further information or to arrange a viewing.
