Well... By some strange course of events.. I have ended up with this. A 846cc, 3 cyl, 5spd, 5dr, Daihatsu Domino. And in the past 3 weeks I've done over 2000 miles in it, and it hasnt complained once, which is pretty miraculous.. Came up well after a half arsed polish, bar the irritating dents in the ridiculously small rear quarter.. but fear not. Sitting polishing it is not my intention, full zokusha based silliness is the plan, (as soon as I have a job to fund it). And in the meantime the cheapest of traveller mods will have to do... Lows courtesy of the fat boys Chopped springs coming soon, and possibly some rattle can badassery.... Any silly suggestions welcome..

Well this thread went well.. Have an update! (and I will try and fix the photo's in the first post..) This is the car A lot has happened since my last post, including a snapped cambelt, which was fixed only to snap again a couple months later due to a shim on the crank gear disintegrating and shredding the new belt The original 846cc, single cam, 6v, carbed 3 pot.. So I decided that the effort of replacing the pistons and valves etc again wasnt worth it, so it was time for an upgrade, and after a lot of very very bad advice from the Daihatsu forums, I bought a 2001 Perodua Kenari off ebay and set to work. The Perodua has a Daihatsu built EJ-VE 3 cylinder, and I was told that it would use the same engine mounts, the same driveshafts and basically bolt straight in. Sadly the people on the forums that gave me this advice didnt have L80's, they had L200's, which look almost identical from the outside so I didnt realise they werent the same, and obviously neither did they... The Perodua lump is 1.0, DOHC, 12v, EFi with VVTi, so should be quite an upgrade, should I ever be able to get it to work... I knew it would be a bit more complicated than just bolt in, as I am going from a carb to EFi, meaning much wiring and fuel system work, but it turns out the engine mounts were completely different, the new driveshafts are too long, and many other things have caused problems. Easy part in progress... Easy part done... That was a good day. The engine mounts, although very different, bolted to the block in the same place, so have just put the original ED-10 mounts onto the EJ-VE for now. They are much less substantial so will have to wait and see if they will work on the heavier lump. Sadly gearbox mounts werent interchangeable so I still have to make a custom one, along with notching the subframe so the new gear linkage doesnt foul. Heres the wiring I have moved over to the Domino, once I've got the engine to start I can start ripping all the unnecessary curse word out of the loom like the leccy windows/abs/pas and all the other chod my car doesnt have, so it shouldnt be too hard, but I'm not a huge fan of wiring so I want to make sure its working so I don't accidently rip out the wrong thing now and have it not work when its mechanically all together.. And with the fuel tank not having an in tank pump, I'm going for a boot mounted swirl pot set up, to save having to cut and weld my tank. And this is pretty much where I have got to so far, with this to go in the spare wheel well... So yeah.. Updates will happen, and shouldnt be so long before I update it again, given I am constantly working on it these days. But also always on the look out for any ED-10 engines/gearboxes or parts for either... So if anyone knows of any please let me know!

Congrats on not only saving that retro shoebox but on killing a perodua in the process That is some loom you have there sir, not my fav job on any swap i have to say, kudos for having a go at that lot , i take it the cam belt going killed the engine off ? there's a bit to be said for a 3 pot howl as long as it's not coming from a corsa !

Nice project. I think the engine is same as cuore. So 54bhp and no vvt. But they are very torquey and go very well. I'd recommend only using good 5w30 oil as they like to wear out their piston rings otherwise. Would the kenari subframe have fitted instead of the domino one? Same engine mounts then

haha cheers Bortaf! Yeah, I'm not looking forward to the wiring, especially as I havent got a wiring diagram for either car, but I reckon I'll be able to work it out without too much bother.. Yeah, the cambelt going killed all the valves and pistons (again..) I was exceptionally lucky last time finding a replacement engine straight away, (from this very forum no less ), but sadly the hunt for another has so far proved fruitless, and I have been looking for a good 3 months now. Close Jomfun, but you are thinking of the EJ-DE, which is pretty much identical to the EJ-VE, the only real difference is the VVTi, and the heads are very slightly different in appearance to accommodate it. And the VE has 63 brake instead of 54, so thats also a bonus! No, sadly not on the subframes, I tried that first! lol

I love Dominos I wanted one after seeing a red one on Ebay a while back but being safety conscious and a larger chap I could never justify putting my Mrs in it or myself.
Looking forward to this though.

Nice little Daihatsu you got there. Had one of these myself.
Is this generation and/or parts still common in the UK? They're becoming quite rare now.

Keep up the good work! I thought for a moment that you had sacked off the Daihatsu for the Perodua, and was getting ready to start shaking my head. However, great to see you're sticking with with. That wiring would give me a migraine!

Cheers guys! This has taken a bit of a back seat lately due to lack of funds and driveshafts that no longer fit Basically I need to find a replacement for the original Domino box, as it will bolt straight on the new lump and obviously the original driveshafts, etc will fit. And to answer Mavista's question, no... rarer than an honest Tory, bits for this damn thing. Thankfully the Daihatsu Move shares the original 5 speed, (and possibly the Perodua Nippa), but short of buying another donor just for the box, which I cant afford right now, I'm still back at the drawing board temporarily. Pretty gutted to be honest, I was on a roll! Selling a load of my aircooled VW hoardings, and once I have a bit more cash updates will be going again..

I thought i had a thread for this from the depths of the grainy black and white times! Turns out I did, and I have discovered this car has been on the back burner for far longer than I thought it had! Nevermind, I am back on it again, and its back distracting me from all the things I should be doing, like the plethora of G11 Charades on my other thread.. Here it is in its new home, where I can actually make some progress. Given the amount of time its sat outside under a tree for its looking remarkably good, and the brakes werent seized and the handbrake even still works. So I doth my cap at the little shoebox for that! Since getting it to the workshop I have started addressing the issues I was having when this thread previously died, and admittedly its got a little out of hand now but sod it. I have nothing but time at the moment and the finished article will be a lot better for it I hope. I've chucked a pic in of it on a small beavertail for the comedy tiny factor. And then its face fell off... And then its engine fell out... I was planning to just give it a clean up and sort the driveshaft issue out and then chuck it all back in but then lockdown boredom set in and now it looks like at least the engine bay is getting the full bare metal resto treatment. Which I wouldnt be remotely surprised if transpires in the rest of the car getting the same. The engine support bar is what started it all, strangely enough. Quick before, during and after: But yeah, thankfully the Mrs loves the belt file and stripping the engine bay of the Domino keeps her entertained while at the workshop. I'm pretty surprised at how little welding has been unearthed so far, I'm hoping this trend remains! So yeah, thats where I'm at with this one now, I'll try not to leave it another 5 years before the next update!

It's definitely a belt file! She did the entirety of our old ldv convoy floor with it aswell, she's still a bit nervous of grinders! In for updates. I wonder what I’ll be up to in 2025... Haaa! Well next time I get round to updating this you can let me know how your 2025 is going 😂

Aha. Made it before '25! 😂 Sadly with little to report other than it now sits here... However, many of the parts off it have made their way onto this! My current daily.. The original one isn't going in the bin though, I will be removing it from the back burner one day. However the now working Domino is the Domino of choice at present so I'll fill this thread with this one instead. It's been a long road getting it to daily duties so I actually have some content to put here..
