Hi there, I'm looking at buying mk2 golf shell to replace mine, and the only bit of rust it has is: What is the best way at attacking this and treating it? i have wirewheels for grinders/drills, i have a couple of sand blasters, what is the best way of getting rid and keeping it at bay? what process from start to primer? what products? thankyou in advanced for any answers (just to note that the battery holder will be getting cut out due to not needing it) Cheers

Hi, wire wheels tend to polish the rust, if you have access to blasting that's your answer. then two pack epoxy primer.

Thankyou for the reply, So will this stop the rust or just hold it back? Just i also have a spitfire 1500 with same kind of surface rust and need to start attacking it

That's actually pretty mint compared to most I've seen! Grind, treat and spray. It's just where water and condensation have sat underneath, sometimes helped by the battery juices. Most of the Mk1 Fiesta's I have had the pleasure to own have completely rotten through here or sometimes just the battery tray dissolves to nothing. I once did an emergency stop to have my battery slide forward and smash the headlight from the inside... Good times

this is a mk2 I'm going to be buying, the one i have at the minute didn't have any rust on it at all, but due to the roof getting flattened by a mate I need a new shell

Dependent on what kind of flattening, new roof skin might be easier than a reshell?

I would also find a plastic tray to sit the battery in ,so no contamination can get on your body.

You can either get a small blaster and take it back to metal, treat the area with rust proofer then use a zinc rich primer, before 2K primer and paint. Or there are products that go straight onto the surface rust and carbonise it. It can then be painted over. www.rust.co.uk/3-treating-rust-the-rustbuster-way/t20

If you don't want to bother with media blasting, you could clean it up with a wire brush on a drill then put some Deox Gel on any remaining rust. That should shift any ingrained rust from the seams.

Dependent on what kind of flattening, new roof skin might be easier than a reshell? its been creased in about 2/3 inches on the roof canal, i will beat it out and try and build shell up at a later date, but I want a mk2 with no roof damage for my perfect mk2, optimusprime2 - I'm planning on doing a build for the rear wheel well to house the battery 1eighteen - what kind of rust proofer would you recommend? I plan on using epoxy after rust proofing then 2k primer, I have a sandblaster so sandblasting isn't a problem. at200 - Yes i was thinking of deox gel, if sandblasting was to remove the need for deox gel I would prefer to sandblast, just because its a timely and messy job using the deox gel

If you have the gear for sandblasting and don't mind masking up the engine bay, I would sand blast. I don't find Deox Gel to be too messy, and find it quite handy that you can target it into small bits of rust that you can't reach with a wire brush or Dremmel, like seams.
I would go over the bare metal with the epoxy primer then top coat. If you aren't spraying with a compressor and want to use an aerosol, I find the Bilt Hamber Electrox primer to be good as it's very high in zinc. Expensive though. If you are spraying, Lechler 2107 epoxy is well liked over on the mig welding forum and as I understand it is not 2k so doesn't require an air fed mask. Quite cheap at Express Paints.

I am using "Dinitrol" on my 02. I would like to recommend something, but don't really have enough experience of the stuff to be honest. But Dinitrol is not cheap and is used by most car manufacturers, so I have decided to go with it.
