Howdy all
My in-laws have a w124 MB in 230e flavour that has a cracked exhaust manifold which means it stinks if you have any kind of ventilation...
Are there any easily found putties (such as Gun gum) that are readily available (i.e. off the shelf at H******s, ECP et al) to repair this?
I know removing and welding is the preferred option but the car resides in France and they visit for short breaks at the moment so a temporary fix is ok at this stage.
cheers

hi, It depends on the Nature and dimentions of the crack. If its due to an unsupported exhaust flexing the manifold.. any paste appied would last minutes or seconds.. So the cause would need to be resoloved. If its an expansion-contraction crack, thats developed over time.. a bit of GUM GUM filled could last a few weeks use. If its further down the system than bolted to the head, the paste solution.. would last longer.

Hi you need to be kind to the manifold bolts, if and when you do the job . They can be very rusty the break off .My 230e had a broken gasket and it was making a noise till engine was warm . .Took it all off ,replaced the outlet manifold gasket .As i came to the last bolt on replacing it it snaped off.So i had to remove the manifold again. Then it was impossible to remove the broken bolt ,it was the last one at the rear of the engine,so i made a jig to fit over the port in the head so i could drill out the broken bolt with the help of a angle drill. The jig worked fine .After i had removed the broken bolt and fitted a new one it all want back and job was done. So if you can manage till a later date i would do so or you may end up with a job like this. One thing if you do go down this path ,give it lots of penetrating oil first let it get in there . I sill have this jig if any one needs one i can send pics and sizes.
