Hey guys, A friend of mine has just asked me to list this for him as he's not particularly computer-literate. Up for sale is his 1984 Capri, originally a 2.0S, upgraded somewhat since it left the factory. Everything below is written from a quick look over the vehicle, i'm going for a proper look and more photos tomorrow so will update. Drivetrain: Bilstein struts, with a spring rate of what feels like 190lb or so. 2.8i brakes, drilled vented and grooved discs 2.8i rear axle, 3.09 diff Single leaf rear springs Lowered around 2" all round Type 9 gearbox with quick shift Most importantly; 2.9 BOA. Interior: Good pinstripe fishnet interior, bit of wear on the drivers bolster as always but comfortable and all there. Good carpets 6 pod dash Very good headlining, no damage to sunroof lining Sunroof handle is broken annoyingly, but easily replaced Working heater!!! Bodywork + Exterior: Good shell, few spots of rust starting here and there but mostly seemed to be in the wings. Inners have been repaired or replaced previously, outers are starting to go at the front. Headlamp bowls look solid, so does front valance Rear arches are solid Paint work is passable but is dull in places owing to some previous owner re-spraying, would no doubt scrub up well with some clear coat and a good polish. New Minilite style alloys - not sure if genuine or not as didn't really look, but they're a very smart set of wheels - 7x13, et-7 New Falken 205/60/13s All in all, seems a decent car to me. Pulls like an absolute train and is frighteningly quick compared to my 3.0S. Great spec and a fantastic base to build on with MOT 'til mid September. I'm not sure what it's worth, but he'd be happy to see £3250ono for a quick sale which seems like an absolute bargain. Car is located just outside of Shoreham, West Sussex. Viewing is encouraged and welcome. You can reach me by PM on here, or by phone on zero7890766240, or Call Jon, the owner, on zero7849979105.

It's certainly got plenty of potential!
Is the car MOT'd? And is there a set of standard or steel wheels available rather than the set it's currently sat on?
Cheers

Potential is the key word here! You'd easily spend the asking price in parts to build one up, so it's nice to have something all there and ready to get improved upon.
Car is MOT'd until mid September and it's only got the one set of wheels (including a Ghia/ S spare) - 4x108 steels are dirt cheap though if you wanted to change these and go all out sleeper.

Good god that's underpriced. Advertise it on www.fordcapriforum.co.uk or Capri Power and I would say you'd get 4.5k all day long. Don't take this personally, but I'm even tempted to buy it, purely to re-advertise it on Ebay as a classified for 6k or best offer. With a well written advert, It'd sell, I guarantee it!

I must admit, i've had no idea what to suggest it goes up at and it does feel very cheap, but he just wants back what it owes him really and it needs moving on as soon as possible. If anyone wants to pay more than it's up for they'd be more than welcome to haha!
And no worries, if I had the money i'd take it on to do the same myself.

Really love this car and wanted one for some time. Having read the comments above re price I've had a quick look on eBay and indeed find them all to be priced considerably higher than this one. I'm a little sceptical as to the low price as in my experience you don't get something for nothing. I'm wondering if there's anything notable that may need attention in the foreseeable future?

Hey Piggy, Nope, nothing I can see - it's a good motor and is honest. It's had work here and there, but you can see what's been done and it's all up to scratch. It's up for what it owes, really - the price is about what you'd put into building one yourself. If you're skeptical on the low price, I'll happily put another £2000 on there for you? Like I've said above, only standout 'work' for me seems to be the wings, but even they are at a stage where remedial work will see them good. It's a cheap blank canvas for something and you'd really be going some to lose money on it - the motor'a worth the asking in parts. Just needs to go quickly, hence the price. If it doesn't sell though, it'll likely be on eBay with a significantly higher figure. Cheers!

I went to collect this car today, a 700 mile journey (North of Scotland to Sussex). I walked away after inspecting it and had to travel 700 miles home empty handed. Fair play to Matt, he returned my deposit but the car is not at all accurately described. I would go as far as saying the vehicle is unsafe for road use due to some very dodgy underbody repairs (Not done by the current owner). I'm very disappointed to have wasted time (1 full day) and money (£150 for flights, £20 for trains, £25 for 1 month road tax and whatever my insurance will charge to cancel my new policy) for a 1400 mile round trip. My fault totally for buying a car unseen, I took a chance and it was the wrong decision, I decided to post this so that anyone else thinking about buying the car knows that it is not roadworthy in it's current condition and should not be advertised or sold as such.

As you can see, we've got something to iron out here.
Deeply sorry you feel misled, but the car has been described to the best of my knowledge and I want to re-iterate that this is advertised on behalf of a friend of mine - I stand to gain nothing from the sale, just putting people in touch with an opportunity relevant to the interests of a lot of RR members.
As Martyn has said, he feels the car is unsafe but i'm in staunch disagreement here - if I thought the car was dangerous, i'd not be putting my name to it. I'm currently awaiting information on what makes the car quite so unroadworthy, which will be thoroughly investigated, documented and, if needs be, properly repaired before the vehicle is re-advertised.
Disappointing result all round - watch this space.

A list of areas not as described and areas in my opinion found to be dangerous has been passed on to Matt for inspection.
A couple of things to say then thats it for me, I'll move on. First, I travelled all that distance to pay the agreed price for a vehicle that I could drive home, I'm not a messer or a tyre kicker, I'm passionate about retro cars and love a good road trip, I went with an open mind and a bag full of tools and would happily have overlooked the odd extra bit of corrosion ect, it's a fact of life that an old ford will need a wee bit of work and I fully expected to have some bits to do when I got home. After inspecting the car I walked away, I did not try to haggle the price, I was not trying to get a better deal or anything like that I genuinely felt that car was unsafe, it is rotten, there is no other way to describe it unfortunately. Matt, you state above that you would not put your name to a car you thought was dangerous, your friend admitted to me he had owned the car for a month and in that time neither of you had inspected it underneath, this is the bit I'm struggling with since he works on vehicles for a living and the capri was kept at his garage. At the same time as saying you would not put your name to a dangerous vehicle, you are also distancing yourself from it and removing responsibility by saying you advertised it for someone else, this is exactly the same tactic your friend used when I challenged him about the areas that were not as described or not described at all, everything I pointed out on that vehicle was allegedly a complete shock to him. " I didn't describe it like that it was Matt" was his answer, he too was distancing himself from the vehicle. Now that's the oldest trick in the book when it comes to selling motors.
I don't feel misled, I WAS misled, whether on purpose or unintentionally I'll never know, if it was unintentionally, have a think about what this was like for me? You want to iron out a few issues here? Take the car to a MOT station and get a pre-MOT inspection done on it.
I don't want anything else from you, you were kind enough to return my deposit, I'm of the opinion that the wasted day and wasted money for flights ect is a small price for me to pay, not to be driving that thing. Thats the last you'll hear about it from me, having spoken to you and going by your input on RR you seem like a decent chap so I'm sure you'll do the right thing.

Received, and due a damn good hunting through next time i'm with the vehicle. Martyn reckons there are issues with OS rear spring hanger, windscreen corner, NS sill near B pillar and NS inner wing, all of which will be cleaned up and jabbed with a big screwdriver.
At this moment in time, I stand by the vehicle and the owner - the car's not been in the fold long, but i've known the vehicle for a good while with its immediate previous owner who again is a stand-up bloke who i'm inclined to trust when he says a car's alright. For full disclosure, the vehicle was bought from a friend of both of ours who needed it gone quick and Jon snapped it up with a view to running it himself before being offered offered a prototype Land Rover he couldn't pass on, subsequently not having the time nor space for it.
I know what a shitter it is to be misled on a motor, and as I said last night on FB I can now sympathise with anyone i've ever dealt with who genuinely was none the wiser, while maintaining sympathy for you who's not had a good result either.
As said, i'm not at all happy about the situation here and will be looking into all of the above fully when i'm with the car next.

The owner for having trusted his friend that all was solid The new buyer - for his wated time & money And last of all, Mr Skoze himself - For doing what any 'Friend' would do There are no winners here - Personally, I think the car should go for MOT and the fail sheet be put up on the advert so that any prospective buyer can decide for himself.

Morning all, i've been working away from civilisation but the conclusion to the saga is as follows...
Last monday, a guy who was interested before Martyn put a deposit down got wind of the car being available again and almost immediately came over with a friend of his, both heavily into Capris and old Fords in general. We spoke at length about what Martyn thought the issues were and they thoroughly inspected the car themselves over the best part of an hour.
I had a damn good look around the car last weekend, and I have to say I do still disagree with the vast majority of the problems listed above - the one bit I will concede is the drivers' sill by the B pillar which had cracked some old filler and i'd not noticed. After beating the hell out of it with a chisel and a very big hammer, we managed to make a 2p sized hole in the top of it, which was then cut back to clean metal and welded up - took an hour at most, very easy fix.
Anyway, the guy was more than happy with the repair, both he and his mate took their time viewing the car and feeling around for rot, took it for a drive and came back looking terrified complimenting how well it drove and how fast it was, before saying - and I quote - "it needs a bit of work here and there, but this is exactly as you described it - i'm not even going to try and haggle." Insured it on the spot, transferred the full asking price and drove it home.
As far as i'm concerned, this is the end of it - two people have independently verified that the car was as described and good enough to warrant buying it.
With regards to the whole "something for nothing" thing, you're right - you usually don't, but sometimes a good opportunity does arise. On the other hand, this could just as easily be applied to the expectations some buyers seem to hold.
I'm not going to enter into a slagging match here as I never met Martyn when he came down and he does strike me as being an alright guy, but I would just like to defend myself and say there are several things i've heard from the people present on the day that really don't sit right with me. Regardless, you came a long way in a hurry to see a car that wasn't what you wanted it to be, and I am genuinely sorry about that - next time we're both involved with the sale of a car at distance again, i'm sure it'll be handled very differently.
I value my reputation; on here, in day to day life, professionally, whatever. I do not appreciate seeing my name dragged through the mud when i've been as fair as I possibly can be. I don't want any animosity from here on in - this is my final say on the matter and I will not be replying to this thread.

What a surprise Matt I would not have expected any other response. Yes I must have imagined the rest of bits I highlighted that were not mentioned in the ad. And also the fact that it wouldn't idle, then wouldn't start yet it was supposedly fine for me to drive back to Scotland, I must have imagined that too. And since you don't appreciate your name getting dragged through the mud but it seems its ok to make me out to be at fault here lets also mention the fact that I was told the car had been owned and driven by Jon for a month before selling it when in fact it had been owned a total of 2 days before the for sale ad went up here, thats right, not a month but 2 days and between then and me coming to see it, it had not been run. Your mate bought a sh#tter, once he realised this he decided to punt it on, using you to sell it on here because he "doesn't use the internet" (also no true), very convenient to dodge any responsibility (which you both did). I made a mistake by purchasing the vehicle without seeing it, it's not the end of the world, I took a chance and it didnt pay off but I take offence at your remarks. Are you honestly trying to say I spent all that money and traveled all that way to turn down a perfectl good car?? Seriously, I fully expected the car to be worse than as described and would happily have overlooked a few bits but that was taking the p1ss. You and your mate were at it. In my opinion.
