Overview
This is the private sale of my own 1993 VW Corrado VR6. I purchased the car on 14th January 2015 and have completed approximately 4,500 trouble-free miles.
This car is in excellent condition overall, having had a full engine rebuild by the previous owner and all of the usual Corrado weak points have been taken care of. The only reason this car is for sale is to make way for something with a little more space and the ability to tow a trailer. This Corrado will be sorely missed!
The details of this car are as follows;
History
This Corrado was registered on 12th October 1993 and comes in the rare colour of Ice Grey Violet Metallic, which was only available in 1993. I am the sixth owner and the previous owner purchased the car on 23rd February 2008.
The previous owner completed a full engine rebuild on the VR6 through 2008-2009 – approximately 15,000 miles ago. As a result of the full rebuild, all of the usual Corrado issues have been taken care of, such as timing chains and guides, clutch and heater matrix.
As of today, the car shows 145,800 miles on the clock. There is a lot of paperwork in the history file, including MOTs from 2001, tax discs from 2005 and a mass of receipts. The VW owner’s handbook is present along with a service book fully stamped up to 123,000 miles/November 2007. Therefore, with the receipts for the engine rebuild and up to date, the car has pretty much a full service history.
The car has an MOT until 20th April 2016 with two advisories. The first was a worn tyre but all four are now new. The second was wear to one wishbone bush but no excessive play. The car is HPI clear.
Body
This Corrado looks lovely in its Ice Grey Violet Metallic paintwork! It really shines up well.
In my ownership the car has had some areas improved. A repair to the driver’s sill had been previously done – and carried out very well but left in primer. The sill has been cleaned-up, undersealed and painted. Same too with the driver’s door bottom which was showing a little corrosion. This has been dealt with and painted.
Finally, the nearside, rear corner had a rust bubble which has been taken care of and painted.
There are a few stone chips on the front bumper and to the small strip below the headlights. Finally, there’s a small rust spot in the paint on the lower, driver’s wing – very much in the surface though and not rotten through.
Overall however, the car looks very straight and the colour looks great, changing ever so slightly in different lights from grey to purple/violet.
The paintwork has had a machine polish and sealed with carnauba wax to preserve the shine.
Mechanical/Running gear
The VR6 engine was treated to a complete rebuild by the previous owner, with many new components including the important timing chains and clutch. Therefore, there should be nothing to worry about for the next owner other than to enjoy the noise from the VR and to service it. We’ve just completed an oil and filter change and replaced the oil cooler seals as one was weeping slightly. The car starts and drives without problem and has no issues.
After the engine rebuild the car had a new radiator fitted, along with a secondary Mocal oil cooler so the engine temperature is rock solid. There’s also a CAT back exhaust fitted with chrome tailpipe which gives a nice howl when you open up the throttle, but quiet at all other times.
The brakes have been upgraded to the larger, 288mm discs. Discs and pads are fresh all round with plenty of meat left on them. The ABS light works and goes out as it should after start-up. Other parts have been renewed such as stub axles and bearings and shocks.
Some items that I have replaced in my ownership include a new wiper motor, the crack pipe and thermostat, new boot struts, new Lupo wipers and an upgraded headlight loom. The headlights are really nice and bright now. Most recently, I have just replaced the old under bonnet soundproofing foam, with a brand new, OEM specification kit which looks fantastic.
As mentioned above, one wishbone bush was listed as an advisory on the MOT. I have the parts for this which can be included in the sale, but to date haven’t felt the need to replace them as the car rides and drives very well.
There are four nearly new tyres fitted on recently refurbished, gold Speedline alloy wheels. The tyres are two-off Toyo Proxy T1-R and two-off Uniroyal Rainsport 2. All have a good amount of tread remaining having only completed circa 1200 miles.
If the gold wheels are a little ‘Marmite’ for you, then the original, silver Speedlines are available, in excellent condition and can be negotiated in with the sale.
Finally, we had a laser geometry set-up completed on the car.
Interior
The interior is in good condition for the age of the car and has no holes on the seat bolsters as you may expect. The carpet is in good condition and a pair of front mats are included (not pictured) but are a little worn with age.
Included in the dash are the very rare, factory option gauge set, which includes voltage gauge and oil pressure. These work correctly and the oil pressure on the engine is very constant, unsurprisingly!
Everything works on the car including the sunroof, MFA trip computer and the rear spoiler (both automatically on speed and using the dash switch.) There is an In-Phase head unit fitted, featuring radio, AUX, USB and SD card slot. The unit also has Bluetooth with hands-free phone calling with good sound quality.
For security, there is the original, VW alarm/immobiliser fitted. All three keys, key tags and two fobs are present and all locks work off the same key.
Summary
This Corrado VR6 is in excellent condition and often gets praise for the way it looks. With all the major items you would expect to have to do on a Corrado already being taken care of, all that is needed is to enjoy the car, service it and maybe a little cosmetic detail here and there.
