okies, i has brand new tyres but one of my front wheels is a tad buckled, I'm sortingthis with a new one HOWEVER in the meantime, i'm getting what i can only work out at around 25MPG. in a v8 id be laughing, in a 1.2 estelle I'm rather closer to tears. so with all the shaking and trying to become friendly with the ditch over 50mph should i just put up with this until the wheel is sorted, or is that the cause at all?
all appreciation helped!

Tyre pressures can have a marked effect on fuel consumption but I've never experienced problems with it due to wheel wobble. Is 25mpg that bad for a relatively old, relatively big car with a relatively small engine? What sort of mileage are you doing?

I'd expect something like 35-40mpg out of that kind of combo but it'd depend on the type of driving you do. You should check all the usual service things like plug &points gaps, timing carb settings etc. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

Do you get petrol smells? Any black exhaust smoke? Does the engine run alright?

hey mate, you get my text earlier? nope, none of the usual, no petrol smells, and idling lovely if a tad high but I'm unwilling to risk stalling in the rain lol!
i do 17 miles each way, of which 4 or so miles is a main road at either end (60mph) and the rest motorway which i do at 55mph usually, especially in the wobblemobile...
keithy, yeah, it is kind bad. my 130lse got well over 40 regularly, and the same engine in a favorit, around the same weight (actually, estates too) gets 40-50 everytime, even driving like a maniac.
ps: overall fact not helped by estelle seeming to have smallest fuel tank since fuel tanks were invented. 7 litres is a qtr tank? although 20 litres isnt half full. I R CONFUSED.

Are you using a Weber or Jikov carb? The Webers tend to be more thirsty. Check the air filter isn't blocked.

I second Dave.
When I was young I made the mistake of stuffing a much too big weber on my 1172cc Skud. 15mpg. OUCH.
Also, check your tank! I've had two skodas that curse word everywhere if you put more than half a tank in. LOLz.

Funny that, last time I went to santa pod in the cortina, it had 13" rostyles, 185/70 tyres. Looked nice, but wobbled all over, didnt improve with balancing, so I changed them for mondeo 14" steels with 185/60 tyres to keep the rolling radius and hence the gearing the same. Wobble gone! I'm putting it down to offset, the rostyles were much deeper dish than standard cortina wheels. Nothing else about the car has changed, but last time it cost me £100 in fuel for 500 miles (about 25mpg) and this time £70 (nearly 35mpg). petrol has gone up about 5p a litre since october too.

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in
