Think I need to order a few gallons of this Same stuff I used in the ultrasonic bath Speaking of baths, this dirty little fellow abandonded ship,or should I say deserted his post in the bellows. He wasn't up for a bath, ultrasonic or not. Just as well, might have taken a few hours for him to get his shoes and socks off....

^^ That's a cool bit of history right there! Nothing so glam on mine. Think the Bitza wheel hub I have might have the outer ring from a Churchill. Only hub I have managed to identify that has the balance weights in the washer, not the hub,if that makes sense. Consensus of opinion is that this grinder was built just after the war. That would explain the kind of Bitza construction, the older style 138 base and work head, but with the slightly later 1300 style wheelhead. Used what they had those days. Stripped off the front cover lastnight, another 3 slotted screws that put up no fight to remove. Running out of screws to take out,but none have been stubborn so far. No sign of anything adrift, but still only two positive gears, with a third occasionally. Still haven't got the traverse gearbox to change direction. Think it might have rolled a key. Hope to get the table off this weekend to get a better look. Brother in law coming down,so hopefully he can give me a hand,if I get my act together. Need to bring pallet jack home, along with a crawl, block and tackle and a couple of slings and shackles. Also noticed this. Doubt it has any relevance ,but interesting in an anoraki way. They have got no balls......

I have seen balls stuck inside nipples before! , sometimes you can get the nipple apart, I doubt if they were made without balls as they act as non return valves as well as dust seals.

You can get them without check valves. Seems very strange to use them there, because as you said, they keep the gunge out.

I take it we can say that the decision to restore has been very firmly made?

Operation remove the bed implemented with no bloodshed or loss of limbs. Well, at least not mine . So handy having an rsj running across the middle. Engine going into the rx2 going to be a sinch with that there Became apparent pretty quickly once the bed was off,as to why we no longer have traverse Should be a coupling underneath that oil pipe. Thought it might be worth a scratch in the coolant tank to see if that's where the awol shaft/ coupling landed up. Off to go have a gander....

Coolant tank never fails to deliver. Very dehydrated coolant with added iron Bit of a clean up yields a fairly worn Reynolds coupling, and the remains of one of the rubber crosses Can't help but think that was effect rather than cause, even with it being badly worn. Think it's a gearbox out job....

Fantastic work being done there, are those grease nipples for oil feed instead ?

I'm constantly amazed at what you make and the tools you have available. I suspect many of us think 'it would be good if I could just...' or 'If I had ...' but you do it.
Looking forward to more updates.

I think that reynolds cplg is a mod, I don't think thy came into existence until the 70s, more likely to be a UJ in there, would a Car steering Rag joint do the job? not going to be damaged too much by grit

^^ I am not convinced on that score Ian. Jaw type couplings have been around since the 1930's. Original invented by Lovejoy in the late 1920's, Either '27 or '29. What makes me think it's original is that it's cast ,not machined from bar ,and it's secured with two slotted screws, not Allen key set screws. Reynolds is best known for chains, but they invented all sorts of things and processes. What also makes me think it's original, is that Reynolds had a long standing relationship with Jones and Shipman. They actually bought Jones and Shipman Plc in the 1990's

Fantastic work being done there, are those grease nipples for oil feed instead ? Thanks for the kind words. Definitely grease. They lubricate the bushes. Grade of grease in the owners manual also.
