How did I miss this before? One of my new favourite things ever... how to take a full-dress Plastic Maggot and a 305 Geep, two of the worst bikes ever made, and turn them into something beyond fantastic .....run out of adjectives. Just superb!

awesome, just awesome! never get bored of seeing a lump of metal go on a lathe and come out the other end as something mechanical! its almost how a sculpture see a statue inside a lump of marble! project is bonkers but I love it. just one question... where the hell do you use a 70mph tractor? I used to have a saint Bernard that was over 20stone and people asked me where it slept anser anywhere he wanted so where do you use a 70mph tractor...........................................................................

just one question... where the hell do you use a 70mph tractor? See the way i see it, you've gone to all the trouble to add brakes all round, handbrake etc, how much more effort would be required to make it road legal and get a set of plates slapped on it! That really would be superb! Not that it isn't already

A brilliant piece of engineering. Is it possible to road register a thing like that in the UK? Be cool if you could. Not sure you'd get away with it here.

Another Stigian Special.
You really are very good at this you know.
Along with the Land Rover Special build you guys did, your builds always remind me of the guys in the war office sitting creating the most outrageous tools for the job.
You have a PM inbound as well.

There's a chap in Yeovil who's got plates on a normal wheel horse, so it must be vaguely possible.

That's proper engineering at its best, so few people these days can do this, I cant wait to see it finished Thanks Winchman, "I'm not sure about proper engineering at it's best", all I'm doing is making random parts fit and work together awesome, just awesome! never get bored of seeing a lump of metal go on a lathe and come out the other end as something mechanical! its almost how a sculpture see a statue inside a lump of marble! project is bonkers but I love it. just one question... where the hell do you use a 70mph tractor? Thanks dude, yeah there is something very satisfying about sticking a strange shaped off-cut of steel in the lathe and finishing with something that's much more pleasing to the eye and fit's where and how you want it to Did I not mention that this build won't do 70mph any more? The speed answer is coming below

One of my new favourite things ever... how to take a full-dress Plastic Maggot and a 305 Geep, two of the worst bikes ever made, and turn them into something beyond fantastic .....run out of adjectives. Just superb! Thanks Luckyseven, I wouldn't call the 305 a bad bike.. Ok the toothed drive belt could break if a stone got where it shouldn't, and I never found a 305 that didn't have that loud "clutch knock" sound, but they did make great field bikes awesome, just awesome! never get bored of seeing a lump of metal go on a lathe and come out the other end as something mechanical! its almost how a sculpture see a statue inside a lump of marble! project is bonkers but I love it. just one question... where the hell do you use a 70mph tractor? I used to have a saint Bernard that was over 20stone and people asked me where it slept anser anywhere he wanted so where do you use a 70mph tractor........................................................................... Hi Omega, the question is not where do you use a 70mph tractor, the question is.. Where do you use a 100+mph tractor? Yep you did read that right, the gearing with the Reliant rear axle and slightly taller tyres works out at 105mph! As to where I can use it is a good question... At the mo I don't know, but there are a few ideas running through my head.. Santa Pod is one of them, I might also be able to get the use of a local air strip for testing.. I quite fancy taking it hill climbing as well just one question... where the hell do you use a 70mph tractor? See the way i see it, you've gone to all the trouble to add brakes all round, handbrake etc, how much more effort would be required to make it road legal and get a set of plates slapped on it! Not sure you'd get away with it here. Thanks Guys, while it would be great to make it road legal there is one slight problem.. Due to bad health I don't drive (well not on the road ) any more, so making it road legal would be a lot of hassle for no reason... It would be fun to pull up in the local Tescos car park though just to see the looks on peoples faces

Hi Rian, how ya doing mate? I think I'm starting to get the knack of these special/strange builds now I will mention to Nigel about your "war office" thinking, it will make him chuckle.. I will answer your PM shortly. There's a chap in Yeovil who's got plates on a normal wheel horse, so it must be vaguely possible. Hi Heath, there are quite a few road legal Wheel Horses out there, I have some good friends in the WH world who have done it a few times and the process isn't too hard.. The chap in Yeovil is one of these guys I'm guessing.. The Lawn Way RoundThere's a chap in Yeovil who's got plates on a normal wheel horse, so it must be vaguely possible. Daylight MOT like trials bikes and some farm equipment can get?? Hi again Rian, they way I understand it is you can get one road legal without lights, but the powers that be prefer that you have some sort of lights fitted. This is one of the greatest things i've seen in a long time. Great job on the machining, building and an awesome vision for the project Hi Dude, thanks for your kind words, it's comments like yours that makes all the work worth while. I didn't really have a vision for this build, it's taken it's own route as it's gone along really. This is bloody brilliant. Can't wait to see the finished article and a vid of it in action! Thanks Nyphur, she's a long way off being finished yet, but a vid or two of her in action will certainly be coming first Daylight MOT like trials bikes and some farm equipment can get?? If its registered as agricultural equipment it will be TAX & MOT exempted like some quads..... Hi Dodgerover, the other way around it (once it is road registered) is to get it's classification changed to an invalid carriage (or what ever they call it these days). Once done it would seem that no more checks are needed/made!

Well, what a week that has been! My step daughter has been seriously ill for a few weeks resulting in her being rushed into hospital for an emergency operation last Monday. Since then she has been staying with us and quite rightly so my workshop time this past week has not really been much! The good news is Lisa is now recovering quite well, and life is slowly returning to normal for both us and Lisa  What workshop time I have had this week has been taken up with welding.. The inside of the chassis where it meets the front axle has been plated up giving it a smoother look and thus changing my plans on how the front end will look.. The outside of the same bit of chassis could of been welded up and ground smooth, but it would never look as smooth as the inside bit.. So a cardboard template was made and some WH panel off cuts were dug out. Resulting in.... The very front of the chassis under the axle needed tidying up, and as the whole build has a Hot Rod feel to it I thought the chassis needed the same touch.. Three bits of plate and a bit of box tacked together. Which go here.... I would of welded them on but early Wednesday morning I ran out of welding gas.. I wondered why the last of the gas vanished very quickly and found a welding burn hole through the rubber pipe! So watch out for flying sparks guys and girls! New gas didn't arrive until late Thursday afternoon so instead of welding I did some cutting.. Eight plates marked out on some 5mm thick steel. These would of been easy to make had I not wanted the curves! It wasn't until yesterday that I got the chance to weld all the new bits on.. Lot's of welding and lot's of grinding the welds smooth, but it was worth it And to keep you amused for a few min's here's my latest Project Why Not video.

this That? Last week was a busy week, Monday started with making lot's of these small plates. To tidy up areas like this.. By the end of the day the welding was 99% done. what's left is only cosmetic stuff so that can wait a while as I want to test drive it asap So I hit the chassis with some red oxide. The next day the engine frame got the same smoothing treatment. It''s fitted to the engine here so I could work out where to put a coil pack mount. A red oxide metal sculpture By Thursday I'd reach this point.. Engine back in, front end on although not set up.. The wheels will be coming off for new tyres to be fitted, I wouldn't trust the old ones to do 5mph safely as they are that cracked up! Footplate bolted down and hand brake fitted. The 90 degree drive/steering box thingy was filled with grease and given a quick blast with the red stuff.. It will be cleaned up fully before final paint. Rear axle installed and assembled.. The new brake shoes I bought were the wrong ones so the old ones with plenty of life in them have been refitted.. New brake cylinders did go in though.. If all goes to plan I hope to do some test driving next week

Evening all, work on Why Not has been progressing but not as fast as I would of liked.. The plan was to do some test driving tomorrow but I'm not quite there yet.. So maybe Monday of Tuesday for the first drive. Anyway, I thought it might be a good idea to have something solid to bolt the seat to, so four bits of angle were added to the luggage rack fender pan frame. The braking system is all plumbed in and mostly bled of air, still a little to come out though. The blue pipes go.. To the fluid reservoirs.. The pipe is air line pipe.. I did test that the fluid wouldn't eat into it by chucking a small length in a jar of brake fluid for a week.. It didn't so I used it. Air filters fitted.. Here's one of em. Nigel the good bloke he is spent a while this afternoon grinding down the welds where I changed the pcd.. A close up. All the pedal have been fitted and connected up. As much as I liked the look of the rust on the bonnet it had to go, so I made a small start last thing today.. That's all for now other than the latest Project Why Not video.. Enjoy

Just insanely brilliant. Made my Thursday morning that. Thanks! Thanks George, glad you enjoyed the vid A Why Not "after 1st test drive" status update... The good news I've fitted a rev counter and worked out how to wire in the temp gauge. The bad news is... The brakes are rubbish. The steering is a bit heavy, does not self center, does not have enough lock and is not enough turns from lock to lock.. The throttle pedal is at a painful angle for my ankles, as is the brake pedal. The throttle pedal needs better return springs.. When braking it's hard not to hit the throttle at the same time! So she needs a few tweaks.. The rear brakes have now been sorted, new shoes and adjusters did the trick, I also gave the inside of the brake drums a de-glaze for good measure. A few mods to the throttle pedal had the "hitting both pedals at the same time" sorted. The front brakes will be sorted by moving the master cylinder up a bit so it gets more leverage, a job for this coming week now WN is back up on the bench. As for the steering... I bought this small steering rack from a Aixam 751/500 micro car to fit.. But the steering rack won't be fitted as it just wouldn't look right.. Also Nigel and I were playing with the current set up yesterday, with a few tweaks and some shims the steering lightened up and even started to self center.. So with a better steering box the steering should be quite good. A new (well used) steering box should be here Mon/Tues. I'm not 100% sure what it came from, but it may be possibly from a Morgan! I will find out when it arrives. Thursday WN went back up on the bench something my back is very much regretting! Even though there were three of us lifting! So I spent Thursday doing some gentle paint stripping and knocking out a few dents. I managed to get a bit more done Friday, the fender pan this time. as you can see the fender pan does not quite reach the foot plates! Some more recycling, this was part of a Spear and Jackson sign. Two plates tacked on.. Both sides done and on the bench to be fully welded. As you can see a little trimming of length is needed.. If all goes to plan and my back sorts it's life out I should have the fender pan finished Monday just in time for a new steering box to turn up. To finish off this update, a few photo's of the beast outside. This photo really hit's the spot for me And a second test drive video.
