i used to do this with an engine crane and found it awkward every time, especially with the gearbox still on. I'm doing and engine swap from one Astra GSi to the other (they're both next to each other) and did both in under an hour.
It depends on the type of car I suppose. The subframe on these are six bolts - disconnect the wiring and hoses and that's it. And confidence that the axle stands/jack don't give and the car doesn't fall on your head!

As you say It really is car dependant, i learnt that one when I was taking a c20xe out of a nova, it was a right fight from above, drop it downwards and lift the shell clear was a piece of the proverbial

Under - it's much simpler.
Having seen a guy under a car which dropped on him I've always been belt and braces about working underneath. I use a spare set of stands as a backup, and put some wheels under there as well.

Depends on how the power unit goes in from the factory, Pretty much all manufacturers go from bellow so under it is........

More often than not I drop the engine out from underneath.
I remember busting a Calibra for parts back in like 2009. I sold the engine on the condition that whoever bought it removed it themselves (I wanted them to hear it running as I had some curse word previously over an engine which was allegedly knackered - it wasn't).
I watched them battle for absolutely ages trying to get it out. After an hour or so I went over and dropped the engine straight out the bottom. They were amazed.

Always out the top for me, I try to leave the subframe bolts as they are invariably seized in, plus you have to faff with the steering rack pas pipes etc, so yeah, definitely out the top!
It does help I think that most cars I do work on have removable front panels, or at least slam panel so lift out the rad and out they come.
