This is exciting. Can't wait to see what it looks like! I wonder who has won it? I hope the microfilm with the competition entries are still intact - they were buried with the car.

I can't wait to see it. Wonder why it was put there in the first place... erm... You missed this? www.buriedcar.comis the official site, but basically in 1957 the city of Tulsa celebrated 50 years of the city's incorporation or whatever and burried a timecapsule in the lawn of the governers residence. Into thes went a bunch of things typical of life in 1957 Tulsa, including a brand new 1957 Plymouth Belvedere (probably a 1958 model). Then in 50 years (15 June 2007) they would dig it all up again and the contents would be warded to the person who in 1957 guessed closest what the population of Tulsa would be in 2007. ;D Oh i see ;D Very interesting. Imaging if you won and it was all rusty, I'd be a bit gutted lol

Here's some information I found about how it was sealed.
"Besides Kennedy Car Liner's part in preserving the car, protective packaging also was provided by the Dobeckmun and Orchard Paper companies. A base sheet of vapor-proof barrier material, made by Dobeckmun and called Metalam, was placed on a steel platform, and the car was placed on it. The material was made of cotton scrim laminated to polyethylene sheeting, aluminum foil and vinyl.
Rust and corrosion protection was provided by sheets of volatile rust inhibitors. These were built by Orchard and used to cover the engine and interior areas of the car. Additional sheets of the material were placed on the car top and under the chassis.
A huge KCL-made plastic bag was positioned over the car with the bottom edges heat sealed to the base sheet, leaving a 4-inch slot opening. The air in the bag was then vacuumed out through the remaining 4-inch slot, producing a hermetically-sealed container. Finally, the car was lowered into an underground concrete vault and sealed".

regardlessof the wealth of 1950s technology thrown at it I still suspect it will all be a bit blue peter. It was designed to stop it getting damp, not submerged.
Although I would love to be wrong on this one!
And Jack - good find!

There's a builder's yard in Redditch where my mate dug a pit and drove his Mk1 Escort into it in 1989. Mind you, it was rotten before it went in!! ![8-)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cool.png)

It'll certainly be an interesting event. Looking forward to it.
Actually, I'm quite surprised nobody has mentioned Christine yet! Wasn't that a Belveder? Fury?

Vic Reeves buried an Austin Somerset in his garden a few years back, I think he buried it for sentimental reasons.....
I can imagine special dispensations could be made for the rich and mildly mad to be buried in their most treasured car in the states. Grisly. Still, the excavation of this Plymouth should be more exciting than the raising of the Mary Rose.

They did indeed, Melanie and Sophie. They were twins with their 60th birthday being in 2007 as well so were buried with it.
Sophie ate Melanie on the 6th day and stayed alive by eating the tyres. Shes still in the boot now. They can hear her knocking but daren't open the boot yet in case she dies in the sunlight.
James Dean down at the front there is the most excited, as he's been saving himself for her.
I'm well excited too see what happens, got it in my faves ready for when it happens.

Can't wait to see what condition it's in, or should that be whats left of it? A neighbour buried several Lambrettas and Bantams in his garden years ago and bits are still turning up. I remember pulling something up a couple of years ago and finding it was a Lambretta kick start lever! A friend of a friend also buried a Fiesta van. Drove it in and then found they hadn't made the hole wide enough to open the door and he had to kick the windscreen out to make his exit ![::)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/eyesroll.png)
