Our son will be able to drive in 12 months. He wants a MK1 Golf/polo or Fiesta, but they are getting too expensive especially the golf, so what cheap alternatives can you think of? He likes Square cars no Jelly moulds. I was hoping to pick something up and do a Lad and Dad project ready so he can use it when he passes his test, I am happy to do some welding Just need to get shut of the trailer and Dodgem now to make room!

I had a mk2 fiesta as my first car a year ago and I loved it. Never let me down (except the wheel fell off but that's another story).
Would highly recommend he gets one of those!

Boxy? Volvo! fam-de-jong.nl/WordPress/wp-content/uploads/t-shirt-back-resized1.jpg How do you make the image appear automatically? 300 series Volvo would be ideal for a new driver I think ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

If he like boxy cars, what about a Fiat Panda. Group 1 insurance, cheap to maintain, and not a curve on it, not even the wheel arches ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) ![](https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQpM_aIiOAmyT03PsLBl5kfXJH2KX3cJuwma4zrqCJKutEx3YMN)

I would suggest looking at insurance costs before the car. Currently in the same boat. One of the apprentices that works for a friend of mine had a Clio for 3 months then jacked it in for a XJ40 which was cheaper to insure than the Clio. Currently tools around in a C180 Supercharged Merc. He is now 18. Why? Insurance companies have lots of statistics for 17-20year olds stacking Clio, Fiesta, Saxo etc but none for those driving a big old 4 door barge... Not tested the theory itself yet but going to have a look at how much for a W122.... P. ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png)

I certainly wouldn't assume that any particular car was cheap until you've got on the phone for some quotes.
We've got a 1.1 Mk2 Fiesta here that was intended for my son to drive, but the insurance is ridiculous. My daughter had a daewoo Matiz as her first car...that was the cheapest thing to insure we could find.

Best thing to try is, find some adverts for car's he like & run the reg though compare the market, all you have to do once you have a price for 1 is change reg number and hit re-quote. Surprising how cheap certain cars are, it's all down to stats! My 2008 Mk5 Golf Gti was cheaper to insure that my 2004 Honda CRV 2.0i Auto! Quotes I had: M5 cheaper than M3, 530i cheaper than 330i. Everything was cheaper than a mk4 fiesta 1.7tdi when I was looking for a 2nd car, even a Corrado 16v! Try quotes for something daft like a E34 BMW or Jag XJ. All that said, I would go for a 205, thats what I had - great cars, no matter what engine ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

Look at kit cars, for the insurance, I think the logic goes 'if you built it, you're going to be careful with it'.....
Have a Quantum 2+2 available if interested.....

What is the budget and just how much work are you willing to do regarding the welding and mechanics?
I would get quote for any of the cars just to cover yourself and consider a few cars including
Citroen 2CV Mini Clubman Peugeot 205 & 309 Ford Sierra
Rust will be the issue with most of the above mind you.
